MMM Vibration

Deck should not vibrate, could be one of the blades is bent, or a (quill) blade shaft is bent from hitting something. Take is off and flip it over, if its a shaft you might be able to spot it by turning the blades one by one, also check for a wobble on the pulleys. Is this the used deck you mentioned in another thread?

Regardless, I believe that you set the engine speed to the PTO 540 mark on your tacometer regardless if it is the mid or rear PTO. It's just that the mid-PTO spins around 2100 rpm if I'm not mistaken. So, maybe you're over-reving the PTO.

Terry; Nope not yet, I am still negotiating but I think the price is PTO speed is okay but in speaking to the owner the problem he notices is when the mower deck is at he highest mowing setting. However what he says is a vibration could be bigger or smaller than what I or you might think it is. I just hope the parts are not too expensive if i get this unit.

I beleive the deck you are purchasing is the suspended desgn. These are generally superior to the ground contact guage wheel type as i showed in my pic. One problem though is that being suspended by the tractor only with no wheels in contact with the ground they can be more prone to vibration. The BX which has a similar 60 inch suspended deck is very smooth but I can see that a bent or damaged blade could cause it to vibrate easily. It is even noted in the manual to periodically to reset the blade posisitons relative to one another (for what good that might do)--there is a prefered position--egads. I suspect the deck has a bent or damaged blade or there is a balance problem with a blade. Is he sending pics, I beleive that usually if it looks good and well cared fore then the blade issue is a minor repair. If the deck itself is bent or warped that is another thing altogether. I am not telling you to buy it or not buy it--as you know I have recommended the 60 inch from the get go. Why? because it seems just from what little I know about your plans that mowing is your primary tractor use and so why skimp on the most important implement to your needs. My 2410 is a nice tractor but mowing is not it's forte, I suspect the same is true of the 4100 for exactly the same reasons, for mowing the BX is a Porche by comparison, the 2410 is like a SUV, one zooms about and the other mashes the heck out of everything. Good luck with the deck, hope it turns out to be a keeper. J

Mowing at the highest level? There are a couple of ways of interpreting that. Like Trescows suggested, the leveling wheels may not be set correctly and the MMM deck is floating and not making ground contact. Did the owner mow with the deck at it topmost draft level?
When setting up the deck for mowing, I believe the owners manual suggests that you keep the wheels about a half inch off of a level surface (like your garage floor). This seems to work very well for me. You're going to have some vibration. Heck you have the engine running at 2100 or so rpm, the MMM PTO engaged, 3 blades whirling around, and the tractor moving. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
I guarantee that after you spend a couple of hours mowing, you will feel the vibrations continueing after you climb off of the tractor. Just like in the cartoons.... /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif So, maybe the previous owner is little oversensative.
One of the things that you have not mentioned is if the owner is going to ship all of the MMM linkage. I can't remember if it comes with the MMM or it is a separate item (knowing JD, it's probably separate!!). Without that linkage system, the MMM is worthless and unusable. There are the main lift links and a set of brackets which work in conjuction with the 3pt hitch lower lift arms. Just a word of caution so that you do not have to use any of that fine Navy language.....

Tres, thanks, and i am going to do a once over on this deck when i get it . it is a 54" for what I believe is a bargain. 2000 deck used on 5 acres and has 150 hours on it.. I hope he at least cleans it a litttl bit before shipping, if not I will try to clean it with something? and repaint the underside.

I wouldn't worry at all about purchasing this deck. Maybe the vibration is overstated. But if not, it's not a very mechanically complicated piece of equipment. Heck, if you have to replace a spindle or some blades, you're still looking at a very reasonable price overall compared to new. The only time I would shy away would be if the deck were twisted or rusty.
