i have a 60 in. mower on bx 2200, i have it cleaned and put up for the winter, was wondering if i could coat the under side with something like spray in bedliner to keep it from rusting. i thought about the brush on bedliner material, but it has something in it that makes it textured, i'd like something like that only smooth. have always wondered why someone hasn't found a way to coat them with teflon, or silverstone, like the cookware uses.

milkman, You are right about not wanting anything with texture, and silverstone would be nice. The mower deck you have is really a very nice and heavy deck, some guys try spraying teflon sprays and rust inhibitors under after a cleaning but if you blow off the top after each use and clean it thoroughly once a month and before storage it will not rust through. I would use rust inhibitor for storage if kept outside.
Just my thoughts, curious to see others maintainance routines.

I had my B7100HST with a 48" Kubota MMM for 15 years. Never had any rust problems. I did paint it a couple of times when it was new. But nothing stuck.
I caught a little portion of one of the Hot Rod programs on TNN yesterday. They were showing how to paint the under side of a rusted truck. The product being used was POR 15. To demonstrate how it worked they pounded it with a hammer. There was not any damage to the painted surface.
I have a new 72" mower on my 2910. At the end of the mowing season this year I'm going to give it a try. It sure looks like it may be the answer to the mower-painting problem.

Rust protection:

I have a 60" mmm for a B7100. The underside of the mower had become quite rusty. Last summer I sandblasted it and spraypainted with Weathershield Rust coat. This seems to have stood up quite well. I also did the same for the underside of our truck [ didn't sand blast on the frame or body panells ] And so far it seems to be holding up quite well. This summer I will do the same to our cars as well as redo the mower and truck.

Who makes Weathershield Rust Coat? I've never heard of it around my area of Michigan.

I'll be waiting to here how it works out for you. Their site sure seems to indicate that it will work great for a mower. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

ronjhall,
Thanks for the link on the por-15. Looks like it may have many uses around the farm.

milkman -

I've used POR15 for about a decade. It's a monopoxy and once it is exposed to the air starts to harden. They say to reseal opened containers with saran wrap inside the cover but my experience has been that the shelf life of an opened can is about a month max. I bought the six pack once and used two containers that summer. A couple years later when I went to use one of the unopened ones they had all turned rock solid. Now I just buy what I plan to use in a season.

For my MMM I try to mow only when dry and pressure wash when needed. Someone on the board turned me on to Mo-Deck which works great to keep grass slime build-up to a minimum. I store the MMM outside on pallets under a blue tarp and spray the deck with a clear rust preventer before tarping it for the winter.
