Yeah, I'm not sure we have fisher cats out here either; lots of coyotes (mostly just hear them) and some cats (next door neighbor saw one recently covering up a deer kill). The fact that the cat was cleanly bitten in half made me think of something pretty big...

And, no, there weren't any tracks (at least none my untrained eye could see)... It was a grassy/brushy area...

We only have 3 acres but seem to get quite a bit of action... I found what was left of a deer carcass at the bottom of the property about a month ago.

Amen about exceptional cats... We still have Vlad's brother and one of our original cats we got from the pound when we moved in. They’re pretty special… Some people think we’re irresponsible for letting the cats have an indoor/outdoor life (too dangerous to be outside), but, it just doesn’t seem right to keep them inside!

Yeah we have lots of raccoons and some foxes too... Again, the clean rip in half had me thinking bigger...

We lost one of those log haired cats (real pretty animal) to a combine when the neighbor was doin soybeans. Not a very pretty sight.

O.K. guys enlighten me what is a fishercat (a regional name for something else?)??
BTW I had a cat killed when I was a boy. A special cat(ain't many of those in my book). Killed by a woodchuck, nibbled right down it's spine breaking it in several places. She was later avenged /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif 12guage with deer slugs, I think it died from lead poisoning./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

To follow up on what TerryinMD said, I remember seeing a show about lions where the same behavior would occur. The reasoning given was that the female would only mate when she did not have any young. The male would do what it took to rectify the situation.
