Mobil 1 oil

   / Mobil 1 oil #11
I am compelled to respond.

I also fly aircraft, and this subject comes up very often in a publication that I get (Light Plane Maintenance). They have done a lot of study of this, and they have determined that synthetics do have (generally) better lubricity than regular oils. They do not recommend (pure) synthetics for aircraft using 100LL because of the previously mentioned problems with lead. There are some semi-synthetics which they think are pretty good.

However, and this is the bottom line for me), they do not recommend extending service intervals. The main issue is that the suspended dirt and soot and other particles are still in there, and changing oil is very cheap insurance. This is especially true on aircraft engines (for example a new TTIO540 Lycoming I was just reading about costs about $68,000). However, the numbers they ran on different oil change intervals versus the cost of an overhaul was so lopsided as to be ridiculous.

So I get the appropriate API service oil, and I change it on a very conservative basis. Next subject please. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Like I said --"oil wars"--and all I asked was for Kubota owners who use Mobil 1 oil to provide info such as--" I have used Mobil 1 in my Kubota XXX for XXX hours and all is well or I have used Mobil 1 in my 'bota for XXX hours and I had a crank failure" etc (purposely over simplified). Then I could accumulate data and it would be meaningful to ME and perhaps other Mobil 1 fans. I also clearly asked for non users or those with negative opinions with no use experience to not respond as I knew it would just rile everyone up. Thanks for all the opinions--never mind. Glueguy, I am an A&P, IA with extensive experience in both turbine and reciprocating engines, have actually rebuilt the things and attended the factory seminars and schools--trust me I know all about the synthetic issue in piston engines. I have a brand new Lycoming O-360 sitting about 15 feet from me for my RV8A project so I am well aware of their costs also--thanks anyway for the heads up. Since the point of this thread has been lost and rendered mute let's just forget it and get back to BX bashing. Y'all calm down now before ya blow a gasket! Take care. J

Re: Mobil 1 oil (buttinski!))

Trescrows/Glueguy,

At considerable risk of being told "MYOB!", I'll offer a "bystander"'s thoughts on your exchanges:

One of the best (and most commented-on) aspects of this forum has always been its lack of animosity or "flaming". Most of us would like to see that atmosphere maintained.

I can't tell whether you guys are smiling-or-not at one another (don't see smiley-faces) as this discussion progresses.

It seems that Trescrows WAS very specific when asking for "user's reports",... and then again, Glueguy probably felt he had some possibly-helpful info to add (though it might not be what some wanted to hear).

But I don't think anything was helped by closing with "Next subject please.", which could be taken as a statement that the writers word was " All that was worth hearing" on the subject, and should be accepted by all as " the last word".

Personally, I also think the whole group "loses" when anyone (let's say "Glueguy"), says "Forget it!" and gives-up on a thread (the point-of-which he considers having "been lost and rendered mute")..., others who may have intended to respond could now be influenced "not-to". Result?... info NOT shared! - hardly the purpose of this list.

It is certainly not my place to tell anyone what to post here. But I'd just like to remind you guys that WHATEVER you post will undoubtedly be read by a great many people, and a number of them may learn-from, of find-something-of-value-in it, ... REGARDLESS of whether or not you agree with one another on any given point(s).

Re. "credentials": worth knowing-about, but no "guarantee" of anything (obviously, since many "experts" disagree).

I think one of the "saving graces" of this group is that while there are without-doubt a number of "smart" people participating, no-one has assumed the mantle of "THE smart-guy".

As a "member", I'll say that for my money, we don't need any "wars" here,.. nor does mention of them add anything, They are all-too-common elsewhere, and have been the cause of the diminishment of too-many good discussion groups.

I feel a bit like a cop stepping between a couple, in a "domestic" dispute,... one of the last places a cop wants to be. ...usually no "winners" /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif .

So I'll apologize now, if my comments were unwarranted. ( Like they say, " Opinions are like ---holes, .. everybody's got one, but nobody wants to listen to the other guy's.")

"Smiley-face" attached to show "good intent",

Correction: "Forget it..." quote should have been attributed to Trescrows, and NOT to Glueguy.,

Sorry 'bout that! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

All that said, how has your expeirence been with Mobil 1? Are there more than one version of it? I'm coming up on my first oil change and am seriously considering it, so do YOU have any experience with it in the BX? Any problems with it? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Mobil 1 oil (buttinski!))

Well said Larry!

And please note that I was not flaming anyone (I did use a smiley or two). /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

My whole point being that too many people get hung up on the quality of the oil, and extend service intervals thereby losing any enhancement the oil may or may not have provided.

I too have used Mobile 1, and other synthetic and semi-synthetic oils. I've since quit doing that, and go for the highest quality oil I can find, and just change very frequently.

I know it works well, when the oil that I change is still relatively clear.

Likewise, whether anyone thinks I'm flaming (I don't think I am /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif), glad to know. I think all these discussions are great! More /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif's

Sorry about straying from the designated topic 3 Crows. Somebody somewhere must have done some (scientific) comparisons of these oils? OTOH, maybe anyone that would has something to gain?

Re: Mobil 1 oil (buttinski!))

Nothing can replace the importance of testing.

An engine that gets run 20 and 30 minutes at a time, maybe gets left in a damp area, would need changes more often than one that gets up to full op-temp and gets stores in a heated or controlled area.

How do you (how can you) determine intervals and grades without testing???

An older engine likewise will contaminate/dilute oil quicker.

Assuming that buying a $5 dollar a quart oil will make your engine bearings last twice as long as Tech $.77 qt oil is to say the least misguided.

How can you establish a base line. "Gee only 7800 hours on that engine and the rings are gone. must a been the cheep oil!."

(sigh) Routine testing and building a good PM schedule on how your oil ages is the way to go!

Keep smilin' (and testin')

<<<<And please note that I was not flaming anyone (I did use a smiley or two).>>>>

Glueguy,
I owe you an apology,... you certainly DID.
Shame on me for not double-checking before I implied otherwise. I may not have "seen" any "smileys" but that doesn't mean there were none.

Most-likely I was addressing what I "felt", rather than what I "saw".

Sorry I didn't pick-up on your effort your make your "attitude" clear.
Those little gifs are a big help, when we can't see expressions. I'll try to pay more attention to them. (...at least before I react as if they weren't there /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif ).

This isn't the first time I've had to say "Nevermind!", Gilda Radner-style.

Glueguy and others--when I said forget it after the point of the thread had been lost and is forever gone--heck I am not sure I remeber was in other words let's just forget the dispute and get on to more productive things--like BX bashing which was intednded as a joke--I would have put smile faces etc all over but I do not know how to do that--soooo--let's forget the whatever the heck is going on and get back to regular buisness--no harm done and I am not angry with anyone---peace-love. Sorry for all the useless post but I think it is important to smooth any ruffled feathers--friends? J
