Anyone have experience using Delvac 5-40 synthetic, (or similar) in a machine for hundreds or thousands of hours? What has been your experience, what has pleased you, and what is your service intervals? It's a tremendous product, but spendy. Is it worth it?

My 7520 has 720 hrs. Approx 500 on Rotella 5W-40. Similar I would guess. I like it year round - starting in the cold - thin enuf to be no worry to work a "cool" engine. - No issues perceived with its hot duty protection -- turbo, some lugging, etc. ...

Don't have enough hours on a tractor to have an opinion in that application. I have used it in VW TDI's and have had no problems running 10k miles between oil changes. Some folks spend the money for oil analysis to see how the oil is holding up.

The rotella syn 5w-40 is only like $8 more a gallon i would guess that the delvac is similar in price, not that bad!

Not enough hours is a wives tale isint it? If not why would Chevy mercedes and many other brands use synthethic oil as factory fill. The same thing about you cant go from syn to regular oil and back, what do they think semi-syn oil is?

I have been using Shell 5Wx40 and now JD 0Wx40 in the truck and tractor. The tractor has a 200-400 hours on the oils. The truck is a 4-5 years at least.

Just bought a 5 gallon bucket of JD 0Wx40 for $140. OUCH that hurt. Noticed that Shell 5Wx40 was only a few dollars cheaper per gallon.

No problems with either. The JD oil starts a bit better on cold mornings and gets a bit better MPG compared to the Shell 5Wx40 oil. And both start better and get better MPG than 15Wx40 oil.

The truck as gone 12K on an oil change. The oil sample I mailed today has almost 14K on the oil. The last UOA said to go to 15K on the oil.

Later,
Dan

Mobil 1 5w-40 is the ONLY oil I use in 4 stroke engines. I currently service 18 engines, gas/diesel/small/large, been using it for +/- 10 years now. My truck has a little over 2000 hours on it. Philip.

2000 hours on a truck, does yours have an hour meter? Most count miles, you must do a good bit of ideling to consider hours? Also as i think about it that really does not seem like that many miles, how many is it by the way? I would put that on my car in a little over 7 years just going to work, forgetting trips and going to the store, etc.

The only reason i ask is that other than say a big rig maybe i have not heard of hours on a truck.

My truck, 2004 Silverado, has an hourmeter read out in the dashboard information center. It's showing 3,445 hours and I currently have a little over 120,000 miles on it.

I installed the hour meter. Pretty simple. Unless you do this and keep track, you are just guessing. 62000 miles and 2000 hours, averages 31 mph. My driving is 30% highway, 30% suburban, 20% city, 10% idleing, just a guess. Think about it, speed limit is 45 mph, every stop sign brings you down to 0 mph, drive thru, atm, stop light, etc. Your true average speed is probably less than you think. I have hour meters in addition to odometers in all our on road vehicles. This study has been going on for quite some time. Yes, I am ****. Philip.
