Delvac 1 is the same thing and might be more available. There is no standard definition of what a synthetic oil is, so it is helpful to know what you are getting. Mobil or Delvac 1 is a good oil, especially for winter. Some folks like to run non-synthetic for the first couple hundred hours until the engine has broken in, but in severe cold the 5w40 will aid in starting.

5w is good stuff in winter. I started mine today and it was -7 yesterday. It started right up and has been outside all winter. It is going down to -20 in a few days and will give the Amsoil 5w30 hdd the true test. I bet it starts.

The nice thing about Rotella 5w40 is the availabilty, TSC & Wal-Mart.

Its one of the reasons why I went to it. I can even buy it at truck stops

I have used "Mobil One Turbo Diesel" in my tractors with no problems. It is rated for what you and I have and I called the company to make sure. It is in my turbo JD5520 right now. The label on the container will give you the rating and it will match your owner's manual.
You can also use and readily find John Deere 0W40 synthetic and it is a great oil. I now buy the JD in five gallon pails of JD and save a couple $$. It's $90 for five gallons.

We're just coming out the backside of 17 days of below zero weather.. Lot's of minus 30F and -35F nights. ('Course the guys a little farther north were in the middle of minus 50F and -60F!!) I'm running Mobil One Turbo Diesel in my diesel engines at this time. I've used Rotella Synthetic and Mobil Delo 400 15W-40 in the past.

It's been my experience with Mobil 1 synthetic and Rotella snythetic that at very cold temps the Mobil 1 doesn't get as thick and makes for easier cold starts (but at -35F there's no "easy" starts). The Rotella is a bit cheaper per gallon ($20 gal. vs $26 gal.; Wally's) than Mobil 1 so, I switch to it for spring-summer-fall field work.

Checked into the Deere synthetic with my dealer. He quoted me a few cents over $22/gal. for a 5gal pail. When I work thru my oil stockpile - I'll likely switch over for a trial run and see how it goes.

I just put the JD 0w40 in the F350 and in the JD 4700.

There was a huge difference when starting the truck in cold weather going from the 15w40 to 5w40. There is a very noticable difference with the 0w40. The engine acts like it does when its warmer outside. Going to be interesting if the mpg goes up a bit. I got about 3% better mpg going from 15w40 to 5w40.

I used to hook up the block heater when using the 15w40 oil because the truck just sounded horrible starting up i the cold. Powering that 1500 watt engine block heater for three hours a day 20 days a month THAT was expensive.

Later,
Dan

I have used the Mobile 1 5W-40 in my JD2210 for a little over a year now and am very satisfied with it. However as many have stated, it can be hard to find. I have enough for my next change, but will probably switch to the Deere 0W-40 synthetic after that, as I have read nothing but good comments about it.
