jOHN DEERE 8640
Hi! I'm new to this site! I do own a new Mahindra 4540, and love it! However, I do mobile repairs on about anything diesel. Right now, I have a customer with a JD 8640 that has hydraulic problems. I'm told that I need to pull the 3 stacked pumps that are located on the rear of the front section, behind the filter base. I have no idea what I'm getting in to. I cannot afford to buy a manual for every type tractor that I work on, so can anyone help me with this? I really don't want to open a can of worms that I can't put back in the can! Anyone?

Welcome to the forum!

I'm going to move this thread over to our John Deere section to see if we can find you some advice.

First I would post in John Deere AG Tractor section
Second describe problem and why you think these pumps need to be pulled.
Third look in JD's online parts catalog. I looked, and found these drawings.

I will say I have never seen or worked on this big of a tractor, but from what I saw on JDparts.com:
I would start with checking/cleaning or replacing all shown screens and filters before tearing out internal pumps.

Then, if problem persists (after clean/new screens/filter) dig deeper.

GOOD LUCK!

Pressure test things, often you have several measure points for hydraulikk pressure and that should be the starting point. But you must know the value, if you don't have books I think I would pass the job.

I'm leaning towards Agvg..
Being a mobile mechanic you HAVE TO KNOW what your doing/buy the manuals.. IF NOT, your no better off than the guy that called you..

What are you gonna do when you spend 4-5 hrs on it & turn & say, sorry I cant fix it.?? Charge the guy 400.-500.00 & drive off??
or tell the guy he "might/probably" needs a hydro. pump that costs 1000.00 & it doesn't fix the problem..
You wont stay in business very long like THAT..
I don't mean to sound critical but you might wanna consider passing on the job.. Just tell the guy, "Sorry, but thats alittle outa my wheel house"..

And how does the customer know it's the pumps? Are you taking over somebody others failed job? Can bee very time consuming to verify that all is there and are OK when you don't know what's been done.

Or even worse -- compound the problem.
Manuals and part diagrams are essential. Either that or get a Bronson rock.

It's why more and more, I don't want to get out of bed in the morning. It seems that nothing out there is easy anymore and less and less friendly to the little guy. Like, everything turns into a can of worms! Just figuring out how to take something apart can be a major hurdle never mind repairing it.
