Around my area they will put the portable around scrap metal buyers when metal prices are high, stop the people with utility trailers that look extremely overloaded, and the semi's pulliing out of the scrap yard. Also during grain harvest season then like to set up near the grain elevator and weigh the trucks and such coming into the elevator. Lets just say you don't want to be pulling a grain cart behind a tractor full of corn. Had one get caught a few years ago, scaled him at 72000# and single axle trailers have a maximum limit of 36000#.

Just don't drive during inspection blitzes. They always announce them a few weeks in advance.

Portable scales and DOT checks are VERY frequent in our area.
I see them several times per week.
