I have narrowed what I think I want down to a Yanmar 18-21 hp 4WD. I am looking for some help on the differences in models. For instance the 1601D, 1602D, 1610D, F16D.
Obvious differences are that the 1601 and 02 have direct transmission between the legs and are saddle style (old style drive train hump), the 1610 is saddle style with power shift between the legs, and the F15D is flat deck (or platform) and direct fender shift.
Padfoot,
The models that you listed are pretty much the same tractor; just different year models. The 1610D is a nice tractor with the powershift trans. I think you would like that option a lot. The f16D does not have the powershift but is a lot roomier. The operator's platform is flat and easier to get on and off of. If you want the powershift trans. and the newer flat platform design you might check out the FX16. It will be a little more money but is a really nice tractor. To be honest; you really can't go wrong with any of the 16 series Yanmars.
I have owned a 1610D for about 2 years. It's been a great tractor, problem free. I use a 5 foot finish mower and a 4 foot bush hog and it handles both very well. The power shift is great as you can downshift without stopping when the grass gets a little thick.
Four really nice tractors, and they all work comparably well. I've got a couple of the older style Yanmars myself, but I've got to say that that new F series sure is a handy machine if you do a lot of climbing on and off when you work.
Not sure if you have seen the YM 187Ds...Mine is an 18 HP, 4wd with Powershift. Don't know if the turf tires would work out real well for your horse farm, but I've had great results on my property (+/- 5 acres woods and lawn).
A really good rule of thumb is the newer the model the lighter the machine. Also each newer model is more complicated in its design. I agree with Aaron though, the FX16 is very nice.
Hi Padfoot, I purchased a 1602D rather than the 1610 with powershift because of purchase price. The 1602 has been a great machine and easily handles a 4 foot brush mower in VERY heavy stuff on hilly ground. I can pull a 4 foot box blade thru clay soil. The dealer I purchased from made me a great deal on the 1602D because the are relatively rare and he found it harder to sell. In 400 hours of hard use this past summer I have only replaced a coolant hose. (plus regular service and filters) It came with a Yanmar tiller and 2 point hitch for under 4K!. I have about $400.00 in the three point hitch I added. I have enough open space that the powershift was not that important to me when I mow. Hope this helps in your decision. I agree that any of the 16 series are great little machines.
