I did NO research but are the HP ratings at different RPM? You can realize different HP at different RPM. Manufactor can rate HP differently by specing at say 3200 RPM and the other at 3600 RPM. Also check bore and stroke and valve size.

Every part except for the carbs is the exact same (same displacement..bore, stroke.., valves, cams, etc) between the 4 HP ratings, and they are all rated at the same 3600 RPM. It's mysterious now that I believe they are doing this with only 2 different carbs all with the same main jets.

There looks to ba absolutely nothing that would make the 27 HP Courage twin any bigger, better, or more expensive to build than the 20 HP version, so why do they even bother with the different ratings? I think it is nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

Like everything I do..............

I won't be able to spend alot of time here, but I love to peek in, it's a three-child-never finished being a foolish teenager-induced-Adult ADD...But anyway, here is my two cents....................

I bet if they loaded up that motor in the video, they could make a S-Load of power for a bit. I've seen people squirt a little NOS into 4HP B&S's on push mower and create screamers. But they blow up in seconds.

Load 'em up and both sides push back.

Not that I would do this with a newer piece of equipment, but we can blow up anything on straight gas, just over-rev it. How about loading it up?????

Maybe a 10HP oldie on NOS could outpull a 25HP new CC in a tug of war??

Only traction and stamina baby........


Maybe I'll pull my new CC against my OLD 11HP "Companion" NO JOKES. But with the Companion on NOS..............................

Who do think would win.

I recently contacted kohler by phone regarding a question about an old kohler i am fixing for my log splitter. I asked the guy about the different hp ratings of the twin, and he said its not just carbs, but the ignition too( I havent looked at the parts yet). I also asked about this 750 hour lifespan I have heard about, and he said that consumer engines are tested to different intervals, but not designed to fail at a shorter life. He also said that the courage uses command rods, pistons, rings, iron liner. I havent checked this out myself yet, but I may cross some parts and see.

I compared ignition parts and they are all the same on the 20, 23, and 25 HP Courage engines, same module and flywheel. The 27 version has slightly different part numbers for its module and flywheel. I didn't compare any parts th the Commands, but am sure many of the internals are the same.

Just on a side by side comparison, it looks to me that the Courage blocks are made from a lighter, more porous aluminum and this is probably where the cost savings is at compared to the Command line. With the same cast iron liners, a Courage could very well last as long as a Command, but the intent of the Courage engine was indeed to compete with the Briggs Intek in the economy range of engines.

I guess my gripe with what is going on, and it's not just Kohler doing it, is that there is really nothing significant on most of these small engines that should make one HP rating cost more than the ones above it, the Courage line is just a good example.
