I need a to start a large garden. In the end, I hope to have over an acre in production eventually. My house and land is on a hill with a lot of rocks, and has never been plowed. I own a '99 kubota b7300,16 hp, what size single bottom plow should I be looking for? The Manual suggests a 12", currently on Craig list there is a ford 101 and a 16 inch. Or are these too big, even if I run them high with a depth wheel? since my tractor is small, should I be looking a plow like A howse mmp 12 designed for the even smaller kubota bx? (rural king). Any advantage to running a sub soiler through the ground first for rocks. I am planning on adding top soil, compost, etc.

I would prefer to buy used, your advise is welcome, thank you

I note you have over 100 views and no replies...too many variables to ascertain a good response...first, me thinks your tractor is way too small for anything except a "garden tractor" plow. Your tractor is most likely a "Category 0" hitch...in other words you can't run a Cat.1 plow such as a Ford 101 (great plow, by the way). Based on your "full of rocks" and want a 1 acre garden you should look for a decent used tractor and implements to accomdate your situation...you'll need something in the 25HP Cat. 1 realm...just my 2 cents worth.

A 16" plow is way too big for you. A 12" should be manageable, but rocks will certainly be a problem. I pull a 16" extra deep bottom Ferguson with a B2630. I have no problems pulling it, but I'm not in new ground either. I've pulled a 2-bottom 12" Ford 101 also. I worked for it, but pulled it fine. It's all about setting up the plow properly. There are many adjustments to be made for such a simple implement. Each adjustment can dramatically impact how easily you are able to pull the plow.

My advice would be to find a nice small 12" single bottom and play with it. Plowing is a lot of fun. Just make sure to get a plow that you are able to buy replacement wear parts for. You want to look for the '3 piece' plows - 3 replaceable wear parts (easy to see) - replaceable moldboard, shin, and share. The older '2-piece' plows (also easy to see) you can only replace the moldboard/shin (one piece) and share - these parts are no longer available.

Good luck!

YOu can also use a middle buster to break it up, or you could rent a tiller and disk it then till it.

If you dont have 4wd you may need to do the tiller aproach.

I know you mentioned you'd like to buy used but I wanted to show you the plow that we make just for subcompact and small compact tractors. The hitch is made narrow and the plow is low profile so you'll have the clearance to lift it off of the ground. We also offer a depth gauge and coulter for these plows. There is also a video showing the details of the plow and another one showing it in action.

Middle buster for rocks and then a tiller, skip the moldboard for that small a tractor.... you will get the same depth of till with a tiller and will use the tiller 10x more than the moldboard.

you can also drop the scarifiers on a box blade all the way down and use it to rip up the area prior to tilling.

What do you mean by "A lot of rocks"? Are these all softball size and smaller or anywhere from golf ball size to bushell basket size. Softball size you would be able to move with your tractor. Bushel basket is going to stop you dead in your tracks. Both the mold board and subsoiler are going to lift the rocks to surface. Problem with rocks is you grow a new crop every year so this will be a constant battle.

Depending on rock size, not sure a tiller would be any better since these would beat the tiller to death.

If you are on a hill do you have to worry about erosion? Once loosened the ground is much easy to wash away Vs Sod.

best of luck

A flat lander with no rocks :)
