I have a Ford Series 101 two bottom moldboard plow, purchased used. Plow may be forty years old.

Plow is used to maintain fire breaks and for food plots.

Though I spray paint the moldboard, shin and other dirt contact parts with Rust-oleum enamel between the one or two occasions a year I plow, the shin and parts of the moldboard have some area rust-pits which allow moist sandy-loam to adhere. This is not to impugn Rust-oleum's reputation, the plow sits outside on the ground, under a cotton canvas permeable tarpaulin, in hot, humid Florida and the plow is old.

What about using the auto-body filler 'Bondo' to fill the pits, smoothing the ground contact parts, so dirt will not adhere? Bondo was fairly easy to sand the last time I used it, fifteen years ago. Pitting is not great enough to make replacing parts worthwhile considering my occasional use. Will my sandy-loam soil abrade 'Bondo' off when the plow is in use?

Another product suggestion?

Another approach?

I wouldn't address the pits at all.

I wouldn't paint the plow, I'd grease it.

Why grease in preference to Rust-oleum? Which grease?
Fluid Film too likely to thin, then drip off in 98 degree heat?

I have the same plow, sitting outside and haven't put anything on them. Wonder if your tarp is holding more moisture in than just being uncovered? I get why you cover them but it may help keep sweat and moisture in, I don't know. Also I wouldn't worry with filling the pits.

We used plain old grease from a grease gun. Not sure how much difference grease vs paint is for rust protection in hot humid environment

For the pits JB Weld would probably be stronger than bondo but not sure if it would adhere or peel off. I suspect bondo would scratch right out since it is easy to sand.

For the plow to work properly it needs to scour. Wear off any rust or coating to shiny metal.

With your limited use you may not wear the paint off. Grease would be gone in 10 feet. And no rust would accumulate.

I agree with the last post. After running a plow 10 feet, the rust is usually scoured off. If the pitting isn't enough for you to be concerned with changing the point or moldboard, then i wouldn't worry with filling them.

I agree with the above, don't worry about the pitting and don't paint the moldboards, simply grease them.

Mine gets wire brushed and coated with oil after use. I keep it off the ground and covered. It looks pretty good to me. If the pits were bad, you could clean them and put a bit of weld in then grind it smooth again.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, I am an ancient who does not have welding skills.
