Moldboard Plow - Smooth rough moldboard & share.

I have a single bottom 16" moldboard plow - Pittsburg Steel. It sits out in the wx and has a nice layer of rust on the share and bottom. In my soil, it's all bright & shiny after 100 feet or so.

If I had pit and was concerned or it created problems - do what wheelbuilder suggests.

Dad always greased ours and it would still get some rust on it. Before using it he would hook it up and got to a sand bar on the creek on our property and scour it. Took three or four passes and it was shiny and as smooth as it was going to get.

I use a Dearborn plow if the name alone tells you anything, Dearborn was bought out by Ford in the 1950's...

It has never been undercover, and it plows just fine.

The great thing is, even some 67 years later, I can drive to my local New Holland dealership and buy parts for it right off the shelf. If a person is worried about pitting, just buy a new moldboard, land slide, plow point, or shin for it; it is not like they are not available today. Give the ole plow another 60 year lease on life!

I still have part of a 5-gallon bucket of grease Dad bought back in the early 60's at an auction. That was back in a time, when you bought grease in buckets to load your grease gun, instead of in tubes. The same old paint brush is in there, he put there originally to "paint" the moldboards & coulter. Just ran a piece of wire through the handle, and hung on the side of the bucket, inside.

Might be a good excuse for you to get an air grease gun, or battery powered one. Give the moldboard multiple shots of grease, then use an old paint brush, to spread it around.
