Moldboard Plow

I had a set of John Deere 3 bottom plows a few years back that would not turn the sod completely over. I found they have moldboard extensions that bolts on the back of the moldboard with 2 bolts and they could be bent to make the sod turn more quickly and keep it from falling back in the furrow. They were made form 3/8 X 4 X 8 inch cold roll flat stock. Ken Sweet

180 acres with a 3 bottom moldboard.... Sounds like some sort of punishment to me. :D

I would do a project like that at about 20-30 acres per year unless it real good deep loam based soil. Ken Sweet

I am looking for a three bottom moldboard plow for a three point hitch. I have 180 acres of hayland to break up, half of it hasn't been broke up for 30 years. Any suggestions on a plow that could do this job.

What type of soil and how much trash on top?

By three point hitch are you looking at semi-mounted or fully mounted? I would expect semi-mounted to be far more popular than fully mounted.

Where are you located? This can and will play a factor in what you can find locally and what the price tag will be.

Rocky soil I would probably consider a spring reset plow VS trip beam.

Lots of trash models like the IH 700 or 710 have good ground clearance for trash.

Don't remember the model of JD hydraulic reset plows but I would avoid one of them.

good luck

The mold board on a breaking plow is longer and has a gentler sweep to it so it does not break the sod strip and let it fall back in the furrow.:D

Thanks for the picture and explanation. Around here we have always used the same plows, didn't matter if it was sod or tilled ground with good luck. We added a curved trash board which seems to help flip the sods over, and also a good set of coulters to give a good slice. The btms aren't as swept back as the ones you have shown.

The best plows I have used were made by Oliver (or who ever made them for Oliver, White, and Ford) with spring reset trips.
