I'm in the process of repainting my house. I've been scraping the old, cracked paint off the wood surfaces. The house has dentil molding along the front. The molding looks like it should be scraped as well. Scraping this stuff is quite tedious. I already have spent the past two weekends and several weeknights scraping (thank God the house is stucco). I'm thinking of replacing the current molding with "molded millwork". I'm wondering if anyone out there has used this stuff.

My thinking is , if I replaced the wood molding with this stuff, I could cap the eaves, fascia boards, etc. at the same time.

Thanks.

Haven't used it but have heard lots of good comments about the stuff. We'll probably add some embelishments to our house with it after construction /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

This material (or similiar brand) was used by Tom Silva on "This Old House's" last project, and he was singing its praises.

Gomez,

I have seen it, or something similar, used on a number of houses I’ve worked on in our area. The carpenters I have talked to like it. It is easy to work with, consistent in size and ready to paint after the nail holes are filled. The only down side I’ve heard is price. Definitely worth consideration if you plan on being in the same home for a long time.

Afternoon Gomez,

Since it's dentil molding I have another option for you. Last year I had a customer ask me to replace a perfectly <A target="_blank" HREF=http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/wroughtnharv/vwp?.dir=/New+Pavilion&.src=ph&.dnm=The+original+pavilion.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/wroughtnharv/lst%3f%26.dir=/New%2bPavilion%26.src=ph%26.view=t>good pavilion</A> with one about three feet bigger all the way around and a foot taller.

One of the problems was matching the dentil molding on the house. It wasn't standard and the costs of duplicating it wasn't so much to me as was the time frame the specialists were quoting.

As I was looking at the stuff on the house it hit me it was just an inch cut every inch and a half if I remember right. So I picked up some clear heart redwood one by fours. Clamped them all together real tight with a sacrificial piece on each outside. I took the speed square and marked a line every two and a half inches. Then I clamped the speed square to the first line and pulled my router through along the line with a one inch bit and cutting the depth I wanted. I just kept moving and reclamping the speed square on the lines I'd marked as I routed along.

When my bud the carpenter showed up we had the dentil molding. It'd taken me less than a half an hour. And it was just as good as what we could have purchased without the time delay.

That might be a fun option for you on this project. I do recommend the redwood though.
