I\'ve got baby turtles!

Well the snapping turtle eggs that I dug up June 13th. are now hatching! so far we have 6 and there were 43 eggs in the bucket of sand. I'll give a final count when they all dig their way to the top of the sand. Oh... and I won't be handing out any cigars, so don't ask!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

i prefer the ducks an geese, so every year or two, i spend a couple hours on the pond bank with a 22 rifle and reduce the size/number of turtles in the pond. seems to work fairly well, i always leave enough to keep things interesting, but i don't want any monster size snappers. i have heard the alligator snapper, which has a real rough shell, is protected in some states?? friends from lousiana, say you'll never see a snapper ran over in their state, you might see a couple folks fightin over who gets the turtle though.

A friend of mine used to trap muskrats when he could actually get some money for the pelts. One day he caught a snapper in a muskrat trap. It was cold, so he picked it up by the tail. Then pulled out his .22 pistol to dispatch it. Well, the shells were all emptys. He said that he would have bet money that he couldn't reload with one hand - but he did get one shell in, and closed the cylinder, pointed it at the head, and just kept pulling the trigger until it went off! He said the pieces were squirming around for quite a while after he cut it up!

My neighbor built a log cabin on his newly aquired property and had a small pond out front that he wanted to enlarge. Early on in the spring when the ground was workable he took an excavator in and dug out the bottom and sides of the pond and put the dirt into piles around the edge.
We later came in with a bulldozer and moved the piles around to pretty things up.
After going over some spots nearly 20 times we found an odd looking rock. After closer examination we took a shovel and dug up a 20 pound snapper that we had run over and packed into the mucky dirt.
Pulled him out and put him in the pond and off he went.
No wonder they survived the dinosaur age....you can't even kill them with a bulldozer.
