I'm running 98 SE and have recently noted a significant drop in performance and a loss of stability in my system. When I check system resources, it says I only have 53% free. As I understand, you need roughly 70 -- 80% free to run smoothly (I did have about that free a few weeks ago). I just ran Ad aware and Spybot, but no increase in free resources. Any suggestions?

Have you added any new programs lately? Under windows task manager is there something using up the cpu under processes? Turned off for several minutes and then restarted? Updated the windows recently? Run and updated virus protection program?

I realize these are basic questions, but?

A few months ago I had problems of the same type with an XP machine, had to replace it as I need it daily for my trading. After working with it for several weeks it finally came out of it, still do not know how I fixed it, but had done everything about ten times and it worked without reformatting the drive.

Clean out your cookies, temporary internet files and then do a scan disk and defrag. Also make sure you don't have programs running in your start up files.
