Mmm.. still thinking about this accident. when I was using my tractor earlier today to move some implements around...

Gosh, what a tragedy. It makes us realize how we take so much for granted. I haven't ever used a PHD but was thinking about getting one in the summer - I never would have thought I could get pulled in. Rather I would have assumed my clothing would tear (dumb I guess). This is a very valuable lesson - too bad the cost of the lesson was so high.

Prayers for his family.

try a heavy wall steel pipe.

Guy I know welded a female threaded fitting to his PHD frame, and just screws in a long pipe with a threaded end when he needs leverage.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not sure even heavy wall pipe will take the abuse I would give it. I was thinking solid round stock or rebar smoothed up to fit in the hole. I am a little afraid that whatever I put in the hole will bend right where it exits the hole. Lots of ways to weld a reinforcement on the rod after it exits the hole but I haven't thought of a way to make it stronger right at the entry to the hole (where the bending force is the greatest on the "handle."

Oh well, I'll try something like rebar or hot rolled round bar (maybe tempered a bit) and see what happens. I know I REALLY NEED to stop jumping up on the frame of the PHD while it is running.

schedule 160:D

And if in real doubt add some series 900 RF flanges!:D

I tacked a piece of small square tube onto the arm of my phd. I use a 5' pry/digger bar in it, for leverage. It works fairly well and an average person won't bend it.

Excellent idea, thanks! I have a digger bar and I agree that it is not likely to be easily bent (one of the few things I think will stand up to me when I get enthusiastic.) I was thinking inside the box, trying to think of what to put in the little round hole. You thought outside the box. I could weld a small "receiver hitch" (pipe or...) to the PHD frame and my applied forces, via the digger bar, would go to the same place!

Another good reason for using the digger bar is that if the auger won't start digging due to hard soil I can use the digger bar to start the hole. ****, what a great solution!!!!!

Thanks to you too, Egon. I will look up the stuff you mentioned as I am not sufficiently conversant with pipe schedules and such to have a clue to what you refer.

I think the heavy walled pipe will fair better than solid rebar.. that.. or weld in a hard pin in the ens of the pipe and then turn down for the correct diameter. shouldn't take much force to 'coax' the bit in. course.. if ya got bad rocky soil.. that's another problem all its own.. that and tree roots.. ugh!

Pat if you do use the digger bar to start the hole make sure you turn off the PTO First :)

Has anyone consider going out the day before and pouring a bucket of water in a small hole where the post hole will be drilled?:D
