I am a first time tractor buyer. Looking for a compact tractor to do brush mowing and deer food plot work. I have been looking in the 25ish HP range, but came across a Montana 4320 TractorData.com Montana 4320 tractor information that fits within by budget. It is a 2010 model year with about 100hrs. No FEL and no attachments. Listed for $7k. I'm thinking that in the long run I may be happier with the extra HP.

I was hoping to get general impressions of the Montana brand and this model in particular if anyone had them.
Also was hoping to get impressions on the price.
Anyone know of a place i could find original list price for this tractor?

Thanks for any help/insight.

Montana is no more. They ceased business 3-4 years ago. Were built by LS/Farmtrac at the time, I believe. I would stay away from it.

Hello, I have a Montana 4320, its a 2006 model. I bought it in 2008 and have had o problems with it. My tractor listed at $14,500 but I got a $2000 rebate from Montana. As far as the price, I don`t think I would give more than $6000 for it. Mine has been trouble free so far. If you don`t mind a off brand tractor it would be fine. You can get parts from a LS dealer. Filters can be got from auto parts stores, just cross reference the numbers. The tractor is listed at 43 horse power and the Pto at 37. The tractor is built very good. The only thing I don`t like is the R4 tires, I would rather have R1 tires. The dry weight is 4250 pounds. The 3 pt is listed at 3000 pounds. I do have a owners manual, if you need to know any other info, let me know.

LS makes a good tractor. One of the distribution channels here used to be Montana (they were often called LG Montana). LS has also sold as FarmTrac, McCormick, and they build compact tractors now for New Holland & Case.

If you like the tractor, it's in good shape, and you have a parts source ... I'd say $6k-7k is very good.

Thanks for the input guys. Seeing as it's LS made and overall I've gotten a good impression of LS I'm thinking of moving forward on this. Thanks again

Man montana tractor is the most reliable small diesel engine there is. The mistibishi engine and Eaton transmission is a lifetime of less problems and a bucket full of cash less for every part on it. Can find parts.anywhere you find your big green tractor parts

Best decision you ever made I just seen this post and I best you've only put a small amount of money into your great decision since purchased

Where can I get a complete copy of the owners manual sir... my dad just purchased one for 3k had a1k clutch put in it and I think it's a great decision.. we love the mistibishi and Eaton drive best of the bestof ok with offbrand. And parts are 10xs cheaper... but....I'm looking for the location and how to test the glow plugs also the location of the silonoid to power the glow plugs....

Before you get the warm fuzzies over the Montana, do some research. We bought one where I worked, and it wasn't as terrific as some say. Parts are NOT available anywhere green parts are sold. Ours was out of commission a couple times waiting on parts. One of our guys had a mishap and damaged the dash. We waited months on that.

If the parts are "10X cheaper" and it cost $1K for a clutch that doesn't compute.

Buying an orphan or off brand works fine if you are a good mechanic. Otherwise probably not. Around here old mechanics sometimes buy old Zetors. Darn good basic machines - but only for the mechanically inclined owner.

You need a VOM to check the glow plugs. Resistance from the glow plug connector to the frame or neg, post on batt. is a range that rises as the plug ages. It should be from half an ohm or so to up to a max of about ten ohms for each plug.

Glow plugs eventually mostly fail "open" just like a light bulb does. So a bad glow plug tends to show infinite ohms and cannot draw any current. Replace it.

Most glow plug problems are a weak battery, bad glow plug solenoids, or fuse.
I've also seen fried wires from solenoid to glow plug.
Just because a solenoid clicks doesn't mean it passes enough amps to the glow plug to light it.

A glow plug circuit does need a strong battery to work the plugs and then crank the engine. Both are real hard on battery reserves. Four glow plugs together can draw almost 100 amps dead cold for a second - which quickly decreases to about 5 to 7 amps per plug as they begin to glow. But the initial shock drops the battery voltage so much that often the battery cannot then crank the engine fast or even at all.
Consider change to a new AGM type battery and clean all battery cable ends/connectors. Check the glow plug fuse.

All of these glow plugs and parts are pretty much universal in their operating specs. If they fit, they might work. Consider a substiture solenoid for sure.
My advice is to ake along an electrical buddy with a VoltOhmMeter and start at NAPA.
Luck, rScotty
