"Whitworth" wrench sizes. Also known as British Standard, and of course labelled B.S.on the side of the socket, at least in American brands like Proto.

I still have a couple of these sockets that I got for a '53 BSA motorcycle I had 40 years ago. I think most of its fasteners accepted S.A.E. tools properly but there was one size slightly larger than 9/16 and another about 7/16 that required the Whitworth sockets.

Was it Early Ford that used those odd 1/32 graduated wrench sizes? I still have a thin 19/32 open-end and something makes me think I got it for late flatheat tappets.

I remembered the "Whitworth" name as well as the "Wentworth" name also before I made the post, so I did a Google search to see which was the correct term. I found that Wentworth was the name for the wrenches and that Whitworth was the standard for the threads on the nuts and bolts. Either way, you knew what I was referring to. I have also run into some other strange thread/nut/bolt standards when repairing some machinery from the 1800's. Sure glad that everything is "standardized" today in the world... well almost.... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
