The only thing I can say is that my Homemade backhoe boom drops a lot faster that it goes up. That tells me that gravity will speed up a no-load return on the cylinder. So it begs the question, why would a couple of snow-plow trip springs not help to speed up the return? It appears that it is not so much the reversing of the fluid in the circuit as it is the short circuit of fluid back to the tank. I would try using a return spring before buying more hydraulics.

That is a interesting idea. i have a load spring in the barn wouldn't take much to rig it for a test.

The power steering unit it self contained has a half gallon reservoir on the end of the pump. If the spring thing doesn't work I may look into a second pump. Probably gonna try to go for a front pump versus a PTO pump and make something that can stay on board all the time because I intend to build a FEL for the tractor this spring.

David Devuono,

Did you realize it takes force to extend the springs, and that is just more work the cyl has to do in extend mode.

The fluid for the cyl has to go through the valve for control, so what is the short circuit thingy.

Well, "no load" is a relative thing. The boom has a significant weight that the extend has to overcome and the retract benefits from!

There are also valves that move the fluid from one side of the cylinder to the other for faster operation. Google "regenerative" valves.
