This has got me wondering a bit about what is considered right and wrong when it comes to borrowing stuff, and then it breaks.

A buddy of mine told me that amongst his group of friends and family lots of borrowing of major equipment goes on. They all have an understanding. If the failure is something you tore up, you fix it. If the failure is something that would have broken anyway, maybe not. A major engine failure may be one of those things that is not the fault of the guy who uses it for just a few minutes. The exceptions would be like running the engine without oil or coolant.

I don't know. Any thought's? I'm the kind of guy who borrows very sparingly, then I fix whatever breaks when I have it.

I agree with you. If Kubota... was not abusing the machine, and he was jsut unlucky enough that the dang thing broke in the short time he used it, and the malfunction was not do to abuse, I would be gritting my teeth, and not just out there offering to fix it up brand new.

To me no different than borrowing my dad or sisters car. If the motor went on the car when I was driving for 30 minutes doing the city speed limit, I can't say as I would offer to fix their motor.

Now if the shoe was on the other fault and it was my car, I wouldn't expect my friends/family to pay to fix my car when it was jsut being used normally. I would think your cousin would talk to you about this and not automatically expect you to foot the bill on this.

Update ! The rod bearings on #4 spun damaged crank So motor is out having crank turned and new rod put in . Mechanics fairly sure it will be "good enough" for casual use which is its job description. We are splitting the bill, I could weasel my way out of it sinceits old etc but the bottom line is i can't just say oh well its old so, thats where she stands right now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm glad you came to an understanding. Sounds fair enough to me as long as you are not flipping the entire bill. It will make you think twice on borrowing something next time though.
