This is in reply to a recent post about fuel consumption on the JD 2305
At about 35 hours on the hour-meter I began to religiously keep track of my fuel consumption. I kept a long in my manuel of the exact hour reading when I would re-fuel. Each time I added EXACTLY 4 gallons of fuel (I have a 5 gallon tank and I don't like having fuel sloshing outside, so I add 1 gallon less than rated). After about 18 months, I averaged about .67 ga/hr. During heavy mowing when I would bush hog my 6 acres, the consumption went up to about .7 ga/hr. During light loader work I imagine the consumption was something like .65 ga/hr. Does this seem consistent with others?
One finer point. In order to measure this, I am using the reading on the hour-meter on the dash (I am sure, no different than everyone else). However, I have noticed that 1 hour on the hour is considerably longer than one hour on the clock. I think that the hour meter only reads accurately when running at full throttle. Can anyone verify this for me? If this is true, then the true consumption in gallons per hour of real time is considerable less, perhaps .5 ga/hr. or even less. I know that RalphVA has stated that he gets around .ga/hr. and while he has a smaller engine, I don't think that size alone can account for his considerably smaller consumption rate. Just my longwinded thoughts.
