Hi Richard,
I'm certainly with you on the perspective that much of this is personal opinion....and my 'proof' is VERY unscientific. I'm just going based on the "Canada Trader", "Bargain Finder" and local papers that I was watching for about 8 - 10 months. The scenario was very consistent. When a Kubota hit the list, which I was watching almost every day, I would call immediately for details. My unscientific estimate would be that over 80% of them were already sold...one to two days after listing. When a JD hit the list I would call immediately for details. 80% of the time they were still available. I'm talking nice machines here. Gently used 4000 series JDs, 790s etc. If the price for them would have been a couple of thousand dollars less...I'd be driving green right now.
Now obviously this is my opinion and is not even close to scientific. And of course there are exceptions to every rule: There were Kubotas that are still on the lists because they were abused or over priced. There were also JD's that were snapped up immediately also. My brother bought one of them.
I'm generally of the opinion that "you get what you pay for", however, in this situation I think you get an excellent machine either way. Obviously there are a lot of people in my area who think the JD is worth the extra money. The local dealership is doing pretty well. The local Kubota dealer just opened up another location too.
