Ditto that. I've had two built and both have been worth the premium. Morton is an impressive organization. Hate to see the whole lot of them look bad from what I guess is an exception to their usual standards.

I did contact Morton HQ. They sent the same guy back up with the unit manager and a couple of other guys. This time they came with a few transits and took a number of measurements. They say the building is out 1/4" on the diagonal. Which is great. The roof line varies between each beam but rises and falls 3/8 of a inch from end to as per Morton's measurements. Even if Morton is right I can not say I am overjoyed with a facia line that goes up and down over 1/4 of a inch. Mostly I take great exception to the way we were treated and the need to get others involved after they began changing their story so often. I refused the $500. I did receive a CO last week but it was for a 24x48 and not a 24x54 building. I guess Morton just forgot to amend the plans with the building department. Right now I'm waiting on the final papers and warrantees. Overall I am pleased with the building just not the appearance of the facia line. I think their work was a bit behind the standards of what I have heard so many others say they received from Morton. There were a lot of things left undone when we were told the building was complete. The crawl space should have never been altered. I had it written into the contract the way I wanted it done. They told me so many different excuses on that one I have no idea what the truth is other than it's not worth fighting about. I think any builder who alters a written contract with out contact or agreement from the client is one I could not give very high marks to. I did get a nice building in the end, not perfect and most certainly not the best in the area but well above average. This was all very difficult for me as I know next to nothing about such things. At times I was afraid my expectations may have been unreasonable. But each time I began to doubt myself I pull up the photos of the roof and read Morton's claims. I sincerely hope that others who might use Morton in the future have a much better experience than I did.

Well the final topping was that I called Morton to tell them I need a corrected Certificate of occupancy. I hung up the phone and I realized they had probably dropped the ball and not amended the zoning permit either. The zoning department was good enough ( THANK GOODNESS ) to wave the fees for addition applications and paperwork. Wow, I'm really glad I thought to follow through on that. Can you imagine getting a tax bill in 10 years with the assessments and late fees ! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Morton Buildings......Top Quality...Professional.....INDEED. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with Morton, but with about a hundred offices (not dealers or franchisees) all over the country there is bound to be some bad apples in the barrel!

Morton just completed a 30 x 38 for me from their Lexington, NC office. I could not be happier! The price was great! The quality and workmanship are outstanding! The Foreman on my job has worked for Morton for 16 years, and his crew was top notch!

The only problem I had was that the mason, a subcontractor, mistakenly ordered 2 truckloads of 3500# test concrete for the floor. I had specified 4000# test. One telephone call had the 3500# sent back! Two hours later 2 trucks arrived with the 4000# concrete on board!! No problem, no hassle, not even a moan or groan!!

When the Building Inspector completed his final inspection, he said to me: "I've been an electrical contractor and building inspector around here for 17 years. What you have here is, by far, the highest quality, finest looking out building that I've seen built here in Orange County in those 17 years !!"!! I will take his word for it!!

That is a fine looking building. If you don't mind the question, how much did it cost ? I sure could use a building like that to store more of my "junk" in. It would take me about 6 months to fill one that size.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

"" If you don't mind the question, how much did it cost ? ""

Of course not!!

I researched both locally and online for several months to find a building to suit my needs. The best one I found was at www.steelbuilding.com. A 24 x 32 x 10 kit for about $10,000 with no interior. Problem was that it had to be erected on an engineered concrete slab. I finally found a local contractor who would "give it a whirl" for an extra $30,000!! Forget it!!!!

I had always heard that Morton Buildings were superior, but I didn't think that I could afford one! I was soon to learn otherwise!!

My Morton representative helped me design my building:
Building 30' wide by 38' long by 10' high (twice the size of a 24 x 24 garage)
Dark Gray, Light Gray, & White Roof
Steel Walls and Roof
16 x 8 Ins Steel OH Door w/windows & Genie Screwdrive Opener
12 x 8 Ins Steel OH Door w/windows & Genie Screwdrive Opener
3' Ins Steel Walk Door w/window
2' Eaves & Overhangs
full Gutters & Ridge Vent
4000# 4" concrete floor
I provided a flat building site, and did the electrical work. Morton did everything else, all building permits, labor, and materials!
PRICE = $23,322!

To this we added the Morton Energy Performer Liner:
Complete Steel Walls w/Girts & Vapor Barrier & R-19 Ins
Complete Steel Ceiling w/Vapor Barrier & R-30 Ins (actually R-35 was installed)
Morton Weather Vane
20 Electrical Openings
PRICE = $4,270!

TOTAL BUILDING COST = $27,592!!

The insulation really works! I open the doors in the morning for 2 hours with the temp ~70. Close up. By late afternoon it's ~90 outside, but only ~80 inside!

Hope this info helps.
As I have gotten older, I have learned that not everything is a 'Do It Yourself' job! Sometimes you're much better off letting the pros do it, with your close inspection! My Morton crew had so many neat tricks that, although not major items, added greatly to the finished product. For example, I hate the look of gutters, but by making the gutters and downspouts Dark Gray, installing the downspouts on the rear of the building, and extending the fasia trim over the front end of the gutters, they nearly disappear!!
Overall, this is about the wisest investment I've made! You are not really spending money on a building, you are investing it!! You are increasing the value of your property by more than the cost, and every day that value increases! Spend $30,000 for a new truck, and what will it be worth 10 or 20 years from now?? What will a nice Morton be worth by then!!??!!

That price does indeed look like a Morton price at $24/sq ft.
My basic pole barn with no goodies like concrete (but w/electric) was $9/sq ft. (3 yrs ago)
My conventional garage, 28x42x11ft w/full attic, stairs, insulated, sheetrocked, full electric, R-15 under the slab w/in-floor heating, large Anderson windows, 3 top-of-the line insulated garage doors w/openers, wood clapboard siding was $21/sq ft. (5 yrs ago)

54x90x14 building built in cold november
lots of dropped nails by cold/gloved hands but the first thing I did when it was finished was measure squareness and it was less than .25" . Never looked "down" the roof line.

That is a fine looking building, Fourteen. I like it. I've not seen a building with interior steel but it sure gives it a finished appearance. Doesn't look like much can go wrong there! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's about the size I want/need to build, but my funds are a bit more limited.

My building is good and square in the diagonal. I really think my crew just slacked off because my barn was in the woods. I also think after having several more people look at my building that I received a bad batch of steel for the roof. I also think my sales rep was very "scattterbrained". He changed stories and excuses so many times I couldn't keep track of the story of the day. I just received my warranty and owners manual so I still won't be telling any one how Morton is the picture of efficiency. I do like my building but I would not recommend them or use them again in the future. I believe I paid around $29 a square foot. 24 x 54, 24 x 24 insulated room with 4 windows, 11' sidewall, skylights, 4" fibermesh concrete, 6' apron, flag pole, cupola, 9' garage door, Interior of room finished with osb 8' up and metal ceiling. I am going to get the gas hooked up for the stove and fridge tomorrow and then the job is complete. I'll try to get some finish photos up soon.
