mosquito magnet success/failure stories?

No firsthand knowledge here since the price tag always sent me running...but a co-worker got one and swears by it. She said the secret is to have it running early in the season to cut back on the breeding stock. And it attracts more than skeeters; she claims the black flies and no-see-um population is way down.

But it's still a LOT of $$$

Well, I have had it running for 2 days now. I obviously cannot tell any difference yet, but I can say for a fact that the sucker is catching a heck of a lot of mosquitos (and a few horseflies). It remains to be seen if it makes any difference though.

It would take forever to count, but Id guesstimate there are at least 1500-2000 dead ones in the bag so far.

If nothing else, I guess it makes me feel like I am at least doing something in the fight to take my yard back from the darn mosquito. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The question is, is it catching the female skeeters? cause they're the ones that bite.......

the claim is that the females are the ones caught...since they are the ones searching out the co2.

maybe i should just turn a few over on their backs and check?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

WiJC - - good to hear you have one pumping away. I've been tempted since we have a couple of skeeters here in Louisiana and my wife is taking medicine to supress her immune system. I'm afraid she will be more succeptable to mosquito borne diseases. I think I read it takes a few days [weeks?] for the mosquito magnet to make a difference - - please keep the reports coming.

Good luck.

How long does a 20# propane tank last in one of those units?

the info on it says the tank will last around 21 days, but after only 3 i cant say for sure yet.

last night there was literally a cloud of mosquitos around the thing, and the bag is loading up pretty quickly. Ill know more about results though in a couple weeks. the info says i should notice results after 7-10 days, and then after 4 weeks the breeding cycle is affected. and THAT is when i should really notice a drop in the numbers.

ill keep posting results and maybe a picture of a pile of dead dried up mosquitos /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif or maybe me sitting outside at dusk sucking on a highlife /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

After researching different models, particularly their reliability, I went with a MegaCatch system. Amazon had last year's model on sale through Sportsman's Guide. MegaCatch.com

I like it because it has several options for trapping certain species as well as a programming timer so I don't run it during the daytime when it is breezy.

I ran it the first week simply on electric (lights and heat). It caught a lot of mosquitos, moths, etc. I then added the optional Octenol strip and that increased the daily catch significantly. After the 2nd week, I have eliminated most if not all the mosquitos but haven't made a dent in the black fly population which is severe right now.

I plan on adding the CO2 tank soon (triple whammy) and hopefully it takes care of those pesky flies.

well, time for the 1 week update. so far ive collected about 1.5 cups worth of dead skeeters. i have noticed over the last few days the catch rate has dropped enough to notice.

i still cannot sit outside w/o spray on in the evening hours, but the amount of them around the house has noticably lessened. so far it has done what was advertised, but it still remains to be seen if in 4-6 weeks they are pretty much wiped out. (once the breeding cycle is affected)

so far so good. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ill continue posting results....

What I found to work well is if you use mosquito attractant with the mosquito magnet. Just toss the attractant in your neighbor's yard and watch the mosquitos go there!

Seriously, try the attactant, but place them on the mosquito magnet. Between the CO2 and the attractant, the mosquitos don't stand a chance! You can get the attractant where they sell bug zappers.
