Well if you want to talk about high hours I've got over 2000 hours on my John Deere 4600 and it hasn't had any work done to it except changing fluids. It's seen alot of hard work and abuse. I really couldn't have asked for anything more from it. When I see the same hours under the same conditions from some of the other brands then I'll start to look harder at them.

I got a Kubota B7800 for my 4 acres, it does everything I want. 22 HP on the PTO, loader runs well and saves my back a lot. I have a 1991 Yanmar/ no loader /that I'm going to sell. I is a very good machine also, 20 PTO, no loader and i wanted guaranteed local service if needed. Paid an extra 10 k for the Kubota.
read over on the Yanmar site and ask questions. Lots of very good guys over there will help you with any parts/ maintance questions. bw

Okay, I also had a JD 4600. I'll have to admit that I actually liked that tractor really well and it never gave me a lick of trouble. The only reason I sold it and went with the Kubota I have is for the factory cab with A/C. With JD, I would have had to go to the next larger size frame to get a cab. At the time, I was using it 90% of the time for mowing and I didn't need the extra weight and size of the next size up JD. I've owned new JD's, Kubota's, and NH's. Not that I had any trouble with the NH, but I personally would say that it would be a coin toss for me between the JD and the Kubota. I had the JD 4600 when I was putting in a lake, putting in a 10 acre yard, and helping put in 2 soccer fields. I felt that I was working that 4600 as hard as it could be worked from hour one.

Cowboydoc & Dargo . . . I think we are losing sight of the original posters REAL issues. He has 4 acres. I think you'd both have to admit that a JD4600 is too large of a machine for a 4 acre lot.

Realistically this guy needs something smaller, perhaps low to mid 20's in the HP range if he is doing mostly maintainence work. Mid 20s to maybe 30hp if he is doing a lot of constrution type work on that 4 acres. Or am I thinking too small?

Bob I have to agree with you … BUT…. looking at his profile . There he says he has 17 acres. If he is going to do things later on with the other acreage he may want to get into the 40 hp bracket for a tractor and get a lawn mower for the up close… KennyV.

I'm thinking that was added when he filled out his profile after I looked. I based the 4 acre comments on a point that he made that he wanted a tractor for mowing 4 acres.

The other thing that we are losing sight of is obstacles. If his four acres are covered with trees, he is looking too big. If it is like my four acre propert with only 5 trees then 30 is a good range. granted it is a little large for the mowing part of the property, but with construction and landscape jobs, it fits the bill perfectly.

Finally I have to agree with Bluecheck...Do Not forget about Mahindra.

The house i bought this year came with a tractor.

It is a Massey mf230 approximately 20 years old one owner.
It had 2700+ hours on it.

Still ran very well.

And from the looks of things this 20 year old tractor had never seen a shop ( even when needed )

Point is even with aparently horrible maintenance the tractor was still doing a good job. (dont think owner had a grease gun ) geeeeeeeeeeeeeeze

I traded it mainly because it did have leaks, lots of abused bent sheet metal, One bad break, worn out steering cylinder. Just to many things to spend money on for such an old tractor.
Also because I just happen to like green and wanted a new play pretty.

I had taken the Massey to dealer to have an estimate on bringing it up to speed and he loaned me a new deere - well what can I say - I fell in love with it.

I plan to keep it a long time and figured what the heck /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

tom

I probably could have just as easily fell in love with a different color but this dealer will do just about anything for me. If i Need a big tractor or rig for a week he just lets me use one free - and is a very service oriented guy.

I have had a lot of trouble with a MF 165. Its drawbar hitch kept falling off with baling equipment attached. I replaced it with a Ford 4110, 1974 vintage. It has about 5000 hours on it, and it is finally dying. I also have a 1982 Kubota B7100 HST with about 2200 hours on it. I have worked it very hard. Implements used include a 5' finishing mower, a 4' brush cutter (which I have used to clear trails of saplings up to 3" diameter in the woods), a 50" rototiller, a 38" FEL, a 4' rear scraper and a 5' front blade. It is on clutch number 2, and it has fluid leaks. It has done a lot of work for a 16 Hp tractor. But I am thinking about getting a Mahindra 5035 HST to replace it and the Ford, as I do not need the Kubota for finish mowing any more, as I use a zero turn radius product for that. (Best buy I ever made. Cuts mowing time from 4-5 hours on my 5 acres of lawn to about 60-75 minutes. Most of the time savings are due to not needing to trim with a small mower and a weed whacker where the Kubota could not go. The ZTR product can do it all, including mowing right around trees.)
