I hear you about coming back for a visit, as my parents went into asssted living then about 9 months later we all got together for a day at their house with them, had a nice dinner - like old times. Also we started going through things tools and such when dad realized he wouldnt be needing anymore. Was a tough day.
Weill as time went on a broken hip, things went downhill and didnt really leave the nursing home.. We ended up cleaning things out a weekend at a time - we basically divided the stuff up and then got one of those PODS units to put everything else in that eventually went to an auction house. This was a process over about 18 months time then we put the house on the market and sold it 9 months later - all told 4 years "dormant" state but everything worked / no major issues with the heatint/plumbing/AC in that time as we kept it in sort of a standby/slow mode.
Its not easy and we wish you well.. hang in there.
