Still reading the Mahindra manual. The manual says don't mount or dismount tractor from right side? I most always use the left side. I don't know why. The tractor seems to be just as easy to mount from either side. What would the safety reason be? Do other brands mention this?

Cheers....Coffeeman

I tell all my customer this also.
There is to much to get tangled up in ie.... Loader joystick, gas pedal or even the hst pedal

The sticker on the dash also says to not "upset" the tractor. Maybe they are sensitive about right side mounting and it "upsets" them. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I know better, but . . . Just last night I went down with a thud. I was getting off the right side and my pants leg caught the accelerator pedal.

Its a new 2015, but we'll get accustomed to each other. So far, I love it.

I agree with the others. Book says to mount or dismount on left side. The safety issue is if you get on or off the right side you could accidentally hit the loader joystick, step on the HST pedal, hit the 3 pt. control, throttle, or brakes. Any of which could cause bodily injury to anyone around the tractor whether running or not. Nothing but the clutch on the left side.

The way my 5005 is built the only way to get on it is via left side, in front of rear tire. The throttle and FEL joystick are in the way on the right. And the operator station is already pretty tight ergonomically (I am 6'1").
Our old JDs, I climb on them from front or back, but still usually on the left. But every tractor I have been around has pretty much been setup for Left Side mount. All the controls are set up for right handed people. I don't remember ever seeing a "Southpaw" tractor.

OK I got it. Brakes, joysticks, throttle etc.

Question #2...Why do we mount a horse from the left?

Cheers

I think that's mostly just traditionally how horses are trained. They expect the rider to mount from the left. However, it may have something to do with the way the saddle is bound on the horse. Perhaps there is less "slippage" of the saddle when mounting from the left side. Actually, I think I remember talking to someone or reading some where that this is the reason you mount a horse from the left side.

I'm not a horse person, though. Perhaps one will speak up.

OK I can answer the horse mounting question. (thanks to my wife explaining a while back) It goes back to medieval times. Most people are right handed and the only way a knight couldn carry a sword was on the left side to access the scabbard with the right hand. Since it hung on the left it would have been very difficult to swing the sword all the way across the horse to mount from the right. This is also the reason why they traditionaly like the mane to lay to the right side, so that when you drew your sword it would not cut the hair as you swung it across. Make sense?

I really like the horse mounting story. Can't speak to validity, but makes some sense.

I figured it was due to the gun scabbard and lasso laying on right side, but don'w know for sure. Riding since I was born and never asked!

As for left side of tractor- yes. After all, it has several horses under the hood (35 in my case) and it would seem unnatural?

Seriously, though, I agree with the FEL hydraulics and 3pt hydraulics and all the hoses and stuff. Most machinery I run, including the larger stuff, is that way.

HINT: Don't park your tractor in low range/reverse. That puts the shifters in the way. Use M-H and Fwd on the semi-shuttle lever. Caught my shorts on them more than once /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
