Had to fix a cracked rim. After I fixed it the tire shop mounted the R4 backwards (opposite the proper rotation direction). I didn't notice until I got back home & needed to get tractor back to work. Quite honestly, I have not noticed a difference in traction. I will get the tire remounted (mostly because it looks goofy ), but am not in a great hurry to do so.

What are the downsides of having one backward mounted front R4?

Nuff said ???
I know we mounted the rears on a Case 1190 backwards one time. Tread was cupped really bad from running it the several miles from one farm to another on the pavement ( about 8 miles one way ). Didnt leave em that way long, just enough to get a little of the cup out of em. Tires were down to about 35% tread anyway.

I know on bigger tractors used for loader work, some guys swear by turning the fronts around. They wear longer, and you have more traction when backing out of places.

Well good. Now I have optimized traction going forward or backward. No longer think of it as looking goofy, but looking cool.:cool2:

Except I have found going down hill the front has all the traction, so for me I would never do that on purpose.

As for the down side, could possibly cause some binding in 4wd but font think it would amount to much of an issue.

I have heard this before as well. Guys say they wear much better.

I dont think thats quite how it is going to work.

What you have now is a tractor that will like to only go in circles:laughing: Turns one way really good, other...not so much.

That was just a joke BTW. In all honety, I dont think there is much difference in traction with R-4's . With ags, it is a different story.

I gotta ask though, who dis-mounted the tire?

Oh there is a difference in traction. My tractor goes much better forwards than backwards. When reversed there really isn't a biting edge, the tread is sloped down to the tire instead of a sharp 90 to dig in. But depending on your terrain, might not matter.

As I think about it I believe my earlier mentioned recollection was concerning ag tires--R1 and not R-4's--that were reversed for better wear characteristics.

It's the R1's that wear better if using a loader most of the time...R4's are meant to be mounted only in one direction.

swap them side to side and they will be going forward again.

If I read the original post correctly... only one tire was repaired and is mounted backwards.
So if you swap side to side, you get the same thing.
Gotta get that tire remounted... then if you really want to run your fronts backwards, swap 'em side to side.
