The Rest of the Story:
Went to a couple auto parts places.... they understood the idea but, had nothing like I'm looking for in stock. Finally, at NAPA, a guy I've dealt with over the years, took me back to their hydraulic hose room.... looking for something that would work (nothing). Pointed at the hose itself and it's pretty stiff once you get large enough to slide the drain hose (end caps) through...
He then said "You should reach out to a Fire Department, they have to replace their fire hoses and the outside of that hose is (I think he said) Kevlar....no mouse is going to chew through that"
Intrigued, I called someone I know (HR gal for a local county) asked her if their fire dept was under her jurisdiction....answer yes. Not only that, turns out her husband is the 'manager' (chief?) over BOTH the fire department AND EMS....
She calls him while I'm yacking with her...
"Richard is looking for a fire hose"
What size Richard?
"He said 1-1 1/2""
"Yeah?"
"Really?"
"TONIGHT???"
Gets back to me.... yes, they have some, he'd be happy to bring a length to her who will leave it outside of their building (closed by time I get there) and leave it for me.
I get it, bring it home.
This stuff is TOUGH to cut. I finally had to get my tin-snips to cut it to length. Got things measured up, wanted to cover another part but the end pieces of the hose were simply too big SO, I split it down the length, wrapped it around the next section of drain hose and then put several zip-ties on it to keep it clamped shut.
Worked like a charm. Shoved dishwasher back. No leaks (I replaced BOTH halves of the hose so I'd hope no leaks!!)
But now, I'm not worried at all about mice. For as difficult as this stuff is/was to cut, it will likely frustrate them or, break their teeth.
I still have about 5' left over.
Knowing this, I'm NOW thinking I can take this left over, split it and put it as a protective cover on some of my hydraulic hoses on my mower.
(my 15' flexwing is a hydraulically powered mower so I have hoses from tractor to pump, to first motor, second motor and then third motor.... these get chaffed as wings might go up/down.
Now that I know this about this hose, it can be used as a hose protector and the best part?
Virtually EVERYONE whom I've talked to about this has told me the fire departments need to get rid of these from time to time (don't want a hose to chaff during a fire!) so they replace them and will give the old ones away for zero cost.
So now, if you've read this thread, you know of a place to go ask if you need/want to get some hose sleeves to protect your hoses.
