I wish I had known about taping my mouth shut at bedtime 50 years ago. If so I would have more teeth now.
I would always wake up in the morning with my mouth open and my throat and mouth completely dried out.

Now at bedtime I put a small piece of 3M Nexcare tape on my lips to hold my mouth closed while I sleep.
No more dried out throat in the morning.

I also put a Breathe Right Extra Strength Nasal Strip on my nose to get maximum air flow through my nose.

Ha! When I read your post title my mind went straight to “taping mouth at night so you don’t say something dumb to your wife that gets you into trouble”!

As you might guess, at times, I say dumb stuff.

This is really a thing? Never heard of such. I feel like that would take a little getting used to, falling asleep with your mouth taped shut.

I've been doing this for over a year now with excellent results. I no longer snore and sleep much better.

Try it, might help you too!

My SIL just got told she had undiagnosed sleep apnea. They also told her she was down to 65% heart function because she wasn't getting enough oxygen in her sleep for years. She is now on a sleep apnea machine. I just mention this FWIW, hoping no one else finds themself in a similar situation.

Sleep apnea is no joke. I've been on a CPAP for close to 10 years now and as much as it sucks wearing a full face mask to sleep, it's made a huge difference. I'm hoping I didn't do too much damage to my heart by waiting too long to take that sleep study

She is sleeping a heck of a lot better with the face mask. They still have to do a sleep study in order for her insurance company to buy the CPAP which she is renting out of her pocket at the moment.

Glad to hear she is doing better. I never realized how much the CPAP helped until I lost power one night and didn't have my generator. I was completely useless the next day

Do a search for mouth taping, you will be surprised how much info comes up

I started with 3M Micopore 1 inch wide all the way across my mouth. no problem falling asleep.
If need to open mouth, just try to open and stick out your tongue, the tape will let loose.

I don't really snore (unless I'm pretty drunk) and I have no issues sleeping. SO thankfully I will not be having to tape my mouth shut. But for those of you that have issues I could see how this would be a wonderful thing.

You do t have to use tape. I use a bipap with the nose pillows so I have to keep my mouth closed. To do this there is a head strap that goes over and behind the head and under the chin to keep it shut.
Comfortable and they last a long time.
If any of you have an Ollies store nearby they have what they call anti snore straps on sale.
Same thing. Cheap way to keep your mouth closed.

The straps tend to come off of some people.
The part on the chin would mess up my beard.

Duct tape? Superglue?
My luck I'd breathe in a fly or lint and I'd have a grim reaper visitation. This is from healthline:
"Mouth taping not only doesn't help you to breathe through your nose, it's also highly dangerous. It can cause obstructed breathing and create other more serious sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disruption."

I don't agree with that statement. if your mouth is shut you have to breathe through your nose.
If your nose is plugged up you do not put tape on your mouth.

Has not happened to me or several others I have seen on YouTube.

I use a CPAP, I have trouble breathing through my nose, so suffocating if I closed off my mouth and the CPAP went or did not use it.

If it works for you, that's great, but be careful as someone may try this and it might not end well.

The difference for me using a CPAP is huge, wish I had done it years earlier.

If needed I also run a humidifier for the room in winter. I don't like the one that integrates with the CPAP.
Humidity will stop the dry throat and nose.

Never had a strap come off. Pulled the hose loose a few times.
Yes it does tend to crimp the beard. Hafta comb and fluff mine every morning.

I have also noticed that my nose has never been totally stopped up since using the bipap. I guess the pressure keeps at least one open.
When the electric goes out I wake up real quick with no pressure.

People's nose can get stopped up intermittently throughout sleeping.
I sleep like Larry:
