yesterday I noticed that I could move my hydro from neutral to high without cluching. There's no grinding any thoughts. btw it's a 2710. thanx, Tom

Tom, the manual says to use the clutch, and I suppose that's the safest thing to do; however, it really doesn't matter so long as you're sitting still and the hydro pedal is centered so that none of those gears are turning. I do it all the time.

Like Bird said,

If you aren't moving its usually a good indication that the gears aren't either. That's all you really care about. The clutch is the mechanical device that disengages the gears from the engine driveline (which keeps turning as long as the engine runs, of course). The HST is always disconnected from the engine. The only thing that connects it is the fluid spinning in the hydro. If the fluid is moving slowly enough that the transmission gears are not turning, then using the clutch to disengage the engine is redundant. My problem with doing that is that the gears are usually not lined up just right, and I need to bump the pedal to move the gears slightly. After I bump it, since they are moving around in there, it is usually fastest (with less grinding) to use the clutch at that point. Sometimes it just goes in without all that fuss, and I count myself lucky (in a small sort of way) that I didn't have to fuss with it again.

All that being said, since 9 times out of 10 mine won't just slip into H, I just use the clutch out of habit to avoid grinding.

PaulT,

The method you have described is exactly the method I came up with for my B2400.

What's it like to engage your rear PTO? Mine is usually difficult to engage because (I think) the teeth don't line up until I bump the clutch a little.

Just a comment on the PTO engagement. On my B2410, I find that I have much more trouble engaging the rear PTO than shifting between ranges. Shifting between ranges just takes a tap of the hydro pedal, or sometimes just going into H, then back into L works. For the rear PTO, there are times that it just doesn't want to go in. The only thing that seems to work is shifting from 2WD to 4WD, then back to 4WD, and then the rear PTO will engage. Sometimes it goes right in, but I've also spend (what seemed like) minutes trying to get it to engage. I always use the clutch for both range and PTO, even though its not really required for range changes standing still.

Rob, I never mess with the 4WD lever if all I want to do is engage the PTO. And since it's different from the hydro range, you do need to use the clutch. But if it doesn't engage easily, I just let up on the clutch and right back down, then engage the PTO. Occasionally it takes 2 or 3 times, but rarely so.

I do have to bump the pedal to get the rear PTO to go in fairly often. I have to do it more often for the H/M/L selector, and even MORE often for the 2/4wd selector. Is this consistent with what others have found? BTW, I can ALWAYS disengage 4wd without any pedal action, even when the tractor is moving. Is there any potential damage to be done from that?

Bird,

I understand that engaging/disengaging 4WD should have nothing to do with being able to engage the PTO, but somehow it does (at least on my tractor /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif). After trying repeatedly at different combinations (clutch, shift range into N, let out clutch, shift into H, shift into L, etc.) I finally tried shifting from 2WD to 4WD (using the clutch, of course), and Shazam!, the PTO then went right in. I'll admit that I don't understand why, and also that it might be something else that is causing it to work, but it hasn't happened this way just once - it has been a dozen or so times at least. So for now I'm going with what works, as strange as it seems.

By the way, is the mid-PTO not supposed to engage when I turn on the lights too? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I'm not one to argue with success, Rob, even if borders on the supernatural./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I've found that my PTO engages easily if I slip the lever back just pretty quickly after depressing the clutch. Now about that mid-PTO . . ., someday I'm going to have to remember and see if mine works. I've never tried to engage it since I don't have any use for it. In fact, I've even considered taking that shift lever off to just get it out of the way.
