Question on hitch pins on implements. Is there a reason that I can’t reverse two lower pins so that they point inward instead of pointing out? I recently picked up a Patu chipper and where the bottom pins are mounted I have to spread my 3 pt hitch arms so they almost rub the tire to hook them up. Once they are on the pins they don’t touch the tires but it is real close. I know there is a balance issue I need to worry about but I don't want to move them a whole lot, just enough to make it easier to hook up and not rub the tires.

I have seen many implements with the pins turned in and also some with the pins turned in the same direction. On a chipper that is not a tilling implement, I'd think anyway you can make hooking up the 3PH easier would be fine. I'd just install them the way it suits me best.

One of my implements (backhoe) has a set of pins that have dual pins on each. In other words, the part of the pin that sticks outward is Ø1-1/8 and the part sticking inward is Ø7/8. I can use either in or outer ones.

You can see it in this photo. Look under the backhoe and you'll see the right side is in the lower link using the outside part of the pins. The left one shows clearly the smaller diameter of the pin pointing inward.

The pins on my boxblade are turned in. I'm not sure it is supposed to be that way, but that's how it was when I bought it, and I left them there. It works fine. Can you tighten your sway chains if you need to, to prevent the implement from hitting the tires?

While I had my old Ford 1100 (SCUT?) I went through two rotary cutters. The first a Woods M-40 (40") had the two lower hitch pins pointing out, the second a Tebben TC96-40 (40") had the pins pointing in. The Tebben was a lot easier to hook up to the 3 point hitch. I did add washers to the pins to minimize pin sliding in the lift arm balls. I never had a problem with this set up, but a rotary cutter is not a chipper. Jay

Thanks for all your input. After I got home last night I looked at the pins on the chipper and first I'm going to flip the pins inward. The chipper has two pretty beefy bars I can unbolt and turn the pins inward with not to much work. That will be my first try now that I know you all have told me other implements can have them turned in. The width on the outside of the pins is a little over 29" and turning them in puts them 27" or so. If that doesn't work I may have to go to a fab shop and get some bars bent in a little more to make it easier to hookup. I have adjusted the sway chains already to keep the chipper from rubbing tires. My RC is right at 27" between pins so that distance should make the chipper easier to connect.

"Standard" width for a Category 1 hitch is 26", so I'd say you are a lot closer to the standard with "pins in" rather than "pins out".

That and the weight of the backhoe and subframe. Kinda messy working conditions that day.;)

Yep, totally understand that!!! :)
