Shows the recovery of Southern Pacific SD-9 diesel locomotive No. 4310, one of four locomotives stranded at Eureka, California, following the Island Mountain Tunnel fire of 1978. The 4,313 foot redwood framed tunnel, located twenty five miles east of Garberville and deep in the Eel River Canyon, caught fire on 6th September 1978, causing more than 1,500 feet of this vital railroad link to collapse. The footage documents the movement of the diesel locomotive in early 1979 along step and winding country roads from Alderpoint to Dos Rios, at which point the locomotive could be put back onto rails for more conventional movement. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) would not allow the locomotives to be moved on highway 101, hence these movements were on the curvier, smaller roads which made the task considerably more challenging for the heavy transportation division of the Bigge Drayage Company, however their Oshkosh F2365 heavy haul truck proved itself up to the challenge.

I had a job yrs ago where i had a company refurbish 3 EMD engines for a power plant. They had to get all kinds of permits and special trailers to haul them.

Somewhere i have pics of the engines torn down being rebuilt.
