Tim,

I'm glad you know it all when it comes to haying. Alot of the guys on here don't know the difference between a mower conditioner, disc mower, haybine, sickle mower, etc. etc. All I meant by my post was for the guys that don't know what it's all about that there really is no best answer. Listen to what everyone says and then go look at what's out there and make your own decision. I was merely trying to let some of the guys know that there are many ways to make hay. What works for one person won't work for another. Still not sure how that was condescending or anything. Sure wasn't meant to be.

Yep, sometimes we do state the obvious. But sometimes what is obvious to one person isn't so obvious to another. And we sometimes don't know the person(s) we're speaking to well enough to know what's obvious to that person. Example: It seemed obvious to me that Cowboydoc was trying to help, but that obviously was not so obvious to you. Uh . . . er, well, obviously that's stating the obvious again though, isn't it? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

( do I come across as the type of person that doesn't seem to be able to distinguish one person's opinion from evidence-based fact? )

I don't know you well enough to answer that. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Seriously though, I've had people help me considerably at times by stating what they thought was obvious (and sometimes it became obvious to me, too, after they told me).

A rotary mower or cutter is what some people call a "brush hog" or by the trademarked name of Bush Hog.

Is your Kuhn just a straight disc mower or a mower conditioner?

"I'm glad you know it all when it comes to haying"

Now come on - when did I say I knew everything about haying? I couldn't even remember that the proper name for our hay mower was a disc mower, not a rotary mower.

"Listen to what everyone says and then go look at what's out there and make your own decision"

But I'm not trying to make a decision; I was just asking if it was indeed a mower similar to the type that we use that gave folks a problem. I was just surprised because almost everyone in our area uses either a disc mower or mower-conditioner instead of a sickle bar mower. Again, I'm not trying to decide anything - I just wanted to hear about somebody elses experience with similar equipment.

To build upon Bird's reply...Assuming certain knowledge can particularly be a problem when the topic of discussion has to do with the minimum requirements to perform a certain task, just like the start of this thread, "Mow, Rake & Round Bale with 40 HP".

It's not unusual for owners of higher end CUTs, e.g., TC40, TC45, to attempt to perform a task better suited to a low end utility tractor. In such situations, assuming knowledge can be dangerous. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Better to state the obvious. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tim,

I"m not sure if you were offended because I hit reply to your message. I certainly wasn't talking to you specifically. When I make a post I usually just hit reply to the last message that is in the post. That happened in this case and you took it personally. It certainly wasn't meant to be directed at you. In the future I'll be sure that I don't hit reply to your message so I don't offend you.

Richard-

Sorry, man. I just was under the impression that when someone replies to my message, they are talking to me specifically, unless they state otherwise. I guess given the general context of some of your verbiage, I can see that you were just doling out general advice. I think that's where it struck me as you were kind of talking down to me. The whole post (in my mental ear) does take a different tone if it is aimed at a large audience rather than a particular person. Guess I was mistaken. Don't worry about offending me in the future - I'll just assume you're not talking to me, since I know it all anyway /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Hey Tim,

So your Kuhn is just a straight disc cutter bar. How long then does your hay take to dry before you can bale it?

/ Mow, Rake & Round Bale with 40 HP. #30
Kinda depends on the hay, the weather before we cut and the weather after we cut. If it is heavier hay (clover, alfalfa, millet) and early in the year when it rained fairly often, it's usually a 3-4 lay time between cutting and baling. For lighter hay (timothy, fescue) early in the year, 2-3 days. Later in the year (like from about now), we take about a day off each of those lay times, but usually no less than two days (cut on Monday, bale on Wednesday). Of course, all of the lay times are assuming that the days are warm, sunny and dry. Late in the year, particularly when it's drought-like and the hay is a little thin, we have cut on one day and baled on the next, but the quality of the hay isn't usually too great (but it beats snowballs in the winter).

My neighbor uses a mower-conditioner early in the year (that's when he does his alfalfa) then switches two a disc mower for the rest of the year. I think using the conditioner cuts about a day off of the lay time, but that's just my observation from watching him work. I've never used a mower conditioner.
