Mowed fields all day, ended up at emergency clinic

As others have noted, our bodies change, our immune system isn't as static as we might think- for good or bad. I wouldn't rule out COIVD-19 throwing a twist in things. I have a persistent cough, minor, something I've never had before until this year: if I take simple anti-histamine meds (over-the-counter stuff) it's pretty much subdued, which leads me to suspect that my immune system has been altered (hoping that it might be a one-off, this year only- woudln't want this to remain with me forever).

Lots of things get stirred up in mowing a field. Possibly he got bit or stung by something he didn't even know about at the time. Lot of possibilities.

Ive picked up poison oak/ivy sometimes and never really knew where or when i got it. I watch carefully because I know i'm allergic to it.

The most curious part of the OP's ailment is the short duration...

And that makes me wonder if the blood tests will show anything conclusive.

I'll ask one other question that you don't have to answer if you don't want to. Were you overly worried, nervous or stressed out about anything? Stress can do all sorts of weird things to us if it gets severe enough. And it doesn't really leave a trail for testing to find.

It's quite possible that he's been exposed to something that he's previously been exposed to but never had adverse reactions to. Sounds like he's not new to the area.

Years ago thought I was having a heart attack, but turned out work related stress. My doctor prescribed valium (diazepam) 5mg and that took care of chest pains. I still carry a few, he said like you did stress can cause weird things and he suggested if I got bee sting or other allergic attack valium is good for stopping over-reaction to something.
Few years ago wife made pancakes with soy flour. About an hour later I had face swelling, in mirror couldn't recognize myself. Glad I didn't go into anaphylactic*shock! I do believe allergies change as we age. Ok up to a tipping point then reaction occurs.
Now people wear masks for covid when we really should take the extra 30 seconds and wear a mask for dust, paint, etc., safety goggles and gloves.

Allergic reactions to food will come on quickly and be gone quickly too. They can be brought on from exercise or a hot day after eating the food. The wife ate shellfish and she puffed up and broke out ALL OVER her body.....yes, ALL over. We put her in a cool bath, gave her Benedryl, and called the doctor. They said to keep monitoring the throat for closer. Now she can't eat shellfish after all these years.

I've read that about half of adults that have food allergies developed them as adults.

Read a story about a Dr. in his 40s having shrimp on an airliner over the Atlantic and had an allergic reaction. He'd eaten shrimp all his life. Now he has a shrimp allergy.

So, you may have developed an allergy to something you were never allergic to before. Hopefully it was a one-off event. I've had hives several times as an adult. No cause was found and they went away within hours.

As a kid, I had hives several times in a short time period and they determined I was allergic to fabric softener. Mom had to stop using it. I avoided it as an adult. But now we use fabric softener sheets and is doesn't seem to bother me. But I always wonder.

I have developed an adult allergy to raw apples and raw cherries. I can still eat both cooked as in a pie etc. But no more raw apples or cherries for me. The old throat starts to close up and the hives and swelling starts. This is a fairly common adult onset allergy.
