Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

So........am I safe if when greasing the spindles to the point that I can "feel" some resistance? The outer 2 will do this after about 3 or 4 pumps...the center seems to want to take as much as I can pump....next time I'll take the covers off to see where it's going. But, now I'm concerned since I grease each time I cut with apprx 3 or 4 pumps to each zerk.

I think you are safe with a couple of pumps of grease for each mowing.

I think your mower has all the pieces. I checked my 60 inch mower and the center blade does not have the angel iron as the two outside ones do. It does have a lock washer on the bolt (center).

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

Thanks pajoube for the info. The mower has been doing OK. The last time i greased it I was deturmined to see grease come out somewhere, I'll bet i put 50 or 60 pumps in each spinnal. Maybe next time it won't take as much. I believe the fact that the main cause of bearing falure (over greasing)applies to sealed bearings.

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

I didn't know there were seal bearings in there or i most likely would not have been greasing them. I would bet one could pick these bearing up at a bearing place for 4 or 5 bucks apiece. Don't know for sure though, guess i will find out when they go out

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

I pay about $15 to $20 for my 1 inch spindle bearings, and they are sealed.

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

50 or 60 pumps in each???!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That seems like a lot!!! I don't get more than 4 or so in each until I feel some resistance. ....and a correction to the statement of flat washers under bolt of spindle....it's a lock washer. As for the grass under the covers...I must be cutting higher grass than most but every time I remove the covers after 6 or so cuttings there's a fair amount in there(as there is in the left wheel motor area)! I do use the leaf blower after each cutting to remove as much grass a possible from everywhere(including the engine area) ...the narrow openings in the tops of the covers don't allow much to blow out. I think I'll just continue to open the covers every other week or so and blow them out..after all, it only takes a few minutes.

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

I've heard of this before, why do you grease a sealed bearing? Is the grease there for heat transfer?

Re: Mower deck blades reinstall on 48\" mower....

I see no reason to grease a sealed bearing. I think manufactures put a grease fitting in place in case someone puts is the wrong type bearing, least expensive. You probably know that some bearings are open like wheel bearings, and some bearings have a seal on one side, which would go to the grease side. A lot of the mower people have sealed bearings and try to pump them full. Over greasing is something that people should get away from. The Internet has lots of articles on greasing.
