mower deck pto box lube button

I just took the deck off the JD 2305 to clean it and sharpen the blades and got to thinking about the push button on the gear box. Thinking does not work as well as it used to, so I have this basic question. How does that thing work?

When I got this tractor - my first - about a year ago someone told me what it means when you push it down and it pops right back up, but I don't remember what they said. I tried searching on this forum, but no joy.

So I'm putting my embarrassment aside and asking for your help. Thanks for any info you have!

Since there have been over 100 views and no comments, maybe I should clarify. I think that the button I'm talking about is to check the status of the lube inside.

I'm guessing that there is a small float inside that makes the button pop up. Maybe if the lube level drops, the button will not pop up after being depressed.
