I am a newbie, my first post.
I own a JD 650 bought new in 1984 (I know it's a Yanmar so direct me if I'm in the wrong forum) with a JD160 mmm going on my 23rd season with 1160 hours.
My mower gear box has developed a leak from the seal off of the driveshaft. I noticed this about two years ago and took the gear box to my dealer to add a new seal, after the repair (about $26.00) from the dealer it kept on leaking and I did not have time to take it back, so I kept on adding gear oil.
I now want to fix it myself for good and need to know a little more about the repair. Do I just disconnect the driveshaft going to the mower gear box, remove the housing bolts, remove the cover (cap, pillow block) and remove the old and install the new seal? Does this seem about right? Do I need to put any sealer on the new seal? Please inform me if I am missing something.
I've heard others say to put stop leak or use gun grease in the gear box.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
