Carefully spray a measured amount of ether or something similarly flammable into the tire after mounting it on the rim, then light it off. If you got it right, the tire is mounted. Too little and the tire doesn't mount. Too much and the tire explodes.

a mixture of oxygen and acetylene would work better, many people already have this for gas welding.. just make sure you have a good, paid up life insurance policy in effect..

EEEEgads, that sounds dangerous. How much is too much?

Well..do it away from any buildings. REMOVE the valve stem core. Have it ready to screw back in. Have an air hose with tire chuck close by. Give it the shortest blast possible. I also would spray a trail of ether on my driveway to safely get back. Or like others mention some type of ignition on a long stick. Just do little increments and don't get impatient if it fails to light or doesn't quite work. Make sure the flame is out inside the tire before you hit it with ether should the previous attempt fail. It often catches the rubber on fire so have an old rag to knock the flame out or water hose. The good part is the heat helps soften the rubber up.

^^and....be ready to fill the tire with air before the tire collapses again. The explosion heats the air very quickly and that rapidly expands the air. The cold tire/wheel will also cool the warm air very quickly so it may collapse again. That is why you should be ready with the air hose to add some air.

Did you ever get them mounted? I don't care for dealing with those small tires.

No I wasn't able to. Like you said small tires are tough to deal with but these were out of my league. Trying to set the bead was the problem. When I put a strap around and tightened it it was like setting a trap. As the strap was tightened the beads would not spread much before they deformed into a wavy shape. With the strap on there any movement of the tire on the rim that put a force against the bead would make the tire spring like a set trap into the collapsed shipment shape. Then I couldn't open the tire up again w/o dismounting one side. Tried all kinds of ways. Let them sit in the hot sun a couple days but they didn't loosen up or change shape at all. I finally ruined a bead from mounting/dismounting so many times.

The things are miserable. No stretch to them and they don't want to be a tire - maybe why they were only $5 a piece at Surplus Center. Better methods would be a tube which several mentioned and would allow me to air it up or one of those bead setter tanks/tools.

Yesterday I ordered a second set from The Mower Tire Store which guarantees well formed uncollapsed good quality tires and chalked the whole thing up to a learning experience. Lucky they were cheap tires.

They will likely still be difficult to mount. I've spent hours trying and wound up taking one set to a dealer to mounted on my bare wheels. It was worth it. A tube will also work but it's still hard getting the tire on the rim.

On these little tires I now take the wheel and tire assy to the shop, buy the tire from them and have them mount it. Cost is not that much and it's worth it to me. They do it every day and know what to do.

This is a game changer for small tires, have had it a number of years and no longer dread the sub-12in wheel tires.

I bought a kit for my rim clamp tire machine that lets me mount 6-12" tires on ANY wheel. Those basdards go on the rims whether they like it or not. As far as airing them up, forget tubeless and toss a tube in there. Be sure to file all the ridges, weld flash, and sharp edges off the inner parts of the rim. Wheels intended to have tubeless tires don't get the extra finishing needed to prevent tube punctures by the unfinished metal crap left on the inside surface.

For really small gauge and mower deck wheels, I recommend solid or foam filled. No more Vise-Grip mounting episodes !
