Mowing Rabbits

A hammer is considered a humane way to dispatch an animal. I have read that trappers sometimes use hammers instead of putting a hole in the fur.

Hammer, knife, gun, rock. Doesn't matter as long as it's quick and painless as possible.

Thank you for understanding.

I let nature take care of who lives and who dies.

I am now part of the killers. I hit something today mowing tall grass. I looked back and all I saw was one greyish fury leg (I think) on mower deck.

I've killed several snakes and rabbits and turtles. Never a fawn that I know of.

My Grandpa said they used to kill their animals to be slaughtered with a sledge hammer because they couldn't afford to shoot them.

Couple weeks ago I shredded about 15 acres. Took better part of the day due to the topography and growth. To my knowledge I did not kill anything. Jumped up a couple rabbits, a couple black rat snakes, and had a very interested hawk involved.

Right now I've got several rabbits around the house that I have to be aware of when finish mowing. Tuesday I jumped one and the little scutter ran over to the side of the dump truck and just sat there. I guess he thought that he was hidden. The last couple of days when I drove into the driveway I saw my groundhog scurrying around down behind the barn.

About a month a go the black rat snake that has been around for several years was run over on the highway. He was crossing from my neighbors into my yard and made it to the yellow line. Big sucker. I would estimate 5 foot long and big as your wrist. When mowing if I saw him I always let him go. Better to have them than copperheads.

I remember five years ago I barely missed a fawn in one of our pastures. Felt really good that I missed it.

I was reading this yesterday morning and mowed one of the lower field sections later in the afternoon, about 8 acres worth. Sure enough I had a fawn jump up right when the bucket was over top of it, luckily it bolted away into the wood line near one of the ponds.

Second pass in that section same thing happened, I thought it was the same fawn. I dropped down a gear and mowed just that small patch thinking the fawn was coming out of the woods and laying back down.

After I got done with this area (about half the size of a football field I went out to finish the bigger area. Sure enough, momma and two twin fawns were out grazing in the same area.

Once I got done I started to head over to the backside of the pond to cut it but saw them standing over there in an access area I mowed a couple of weeks earlier - the entire area is about a football field size but hardly accessed by us because we aren't fishing it right now.. I figured I will let it be for a month and give the little critters a safe zone. It startled the heck out of me when it happened... as much as I hunt I would hate to run a fawn over, these things were about 20 lbs and tiny.

I see several fawns have been hit on I-94 through Kalamazoo County in the past few days. One of them I though was a big cat; it was so small.

I was talking to the wife last night and said I was going to make a mental note and get all the cutting done by June 1 and not cut the fields until after the middle/end of July. We do a lot of white tail deer hunting and this is the first year for us living on this property, I have to at least give them a fighting chance. LOL
