Mowing slopes with a tractor

Agree with rekees4300. I lost a friend last year with a roll over after he hit a stump hidden in tall grass. Safety first and if in doubt don't do it.

If you have a rear tire lifting off and you keep doing that, you are flirting with very serious danger! Of course you have made your decision and I don't expect to change your mind, but I seriously hope no one else gets the idea that this is a safe approach!

How the rear tires are set will have a bearing on what the tractor can handle. My old L3750 could be adjusted from 52" to 76" width.

I mow up and down a fairly steep hill couple times per year. As I mow it, I get more comfortable but am still very cautious. Near one end, it gets too steep (tractor won't back up hill, slides down, even in 4WD). I worry that with the steeper hills, my engine or HST could starve for oil. I read about the HST pump having a problem on my tractor model and there was a upgrade to fix it, I rushed out to look at my tractor, thinking the whole time I had ruined something.. but the upgrade was already done.. whatever you find for solution, remember to not just check the slope you are comfortable with, but make sure the equipment can run reliably on that slope..

Good luck on your journey!

I know that the PO has said that he mowed the slopes cross ways but what is his tractor set up like. Ive mowed some rather steep slopes with a 5310, similar to the 5410 you say he used. its a rather stable beast and if all the way widened out is very comfortable on 20 -30 deg. slopes compared to other narrower tractors. That said. Ive mowed with a kubota mx5400 with wide special turf tires that are almost 100" wide to the outsides and it feels like you could drive on a wall with that thing and not roll it. If you do decide to mow with a tractor choose one that has a wide or capability to be wide wheel width and also some weight to keep you planted and prevent you from sliding down the hill, an all too not fun experience let me tell you. Most importantly if your uncomfortable don't do it. you will loose focus and get yourself in even more trouble. Be safe and happy tractoring.
