MT372 Water in Steering Box and how to refill box

My MT372 started oozing gear lube from the steering box. I discovered that it had some water in the bottom when I dug in. I assume that the seal around the steering shaft is probably shot. Is that right under the steering wheel, or do I need to pull the column to access it?

Also, to refill the box I was going to remove both top bolts from the plate on the right side, then fill through the highest hole until lube oozed out of the 2nd highest one. Is there a better way to fill it?

Add more water!?
You may be able to get the shaft seal to hold the gear lube better if you can get to it, clean the outside then spray it where the seal contacts the shaft with Brakleen. It's not a permanent fix, but it can work depending on the age/condition of the seal and the shaft.

There is a seal right under the steering wheel at the top of the column. You are on the right track for filling it. I filled mine with a small pump normally used to fill outboard lower units.

Thanks. Using one of these: Fluid Lubricant Pump type pumps it took 23 pumps to fill it, in case someone is curious.

Ok, where can I buy that shaft seal online? Is there any other way water could be getting into the box?
