I recently bought one of these, it's in good shape with the exception of the oil filler cap. It, of course, is no longer available from any parts place i can find. :( does anyone know if there is a valve of some kind in the cap? Oil will come streaming out of the little breather hole if I dont plug it with something. I assume there used to be a check ball or something in the cap. Thanks if anyone can help me out here.

:welcome:

Would you post a pic of the splitter and where the cap (not in good shape or missing? ) goes, please.

Sounds like the oil reservoir may be too full, and comes out when it heats up.

A little more info would help. :)

my troy built (made by MTD) has a vented plug that spits fluid if the hydraulic fluid level is too high. When you put it into the retract detent, when the cylinder fully retracts and the pressure builds, it will spit a few drops out of the vent hole until the valve returns to neutral.

have you looked at the MTD website for a manual?

Sorry I haven't had time for pics yet, I will post them soon I hope. The fluid is not over full and I do have a manual. It will spew fluid 4 feet in the air out of this tiny pencil lead sized hole. It looks to me like part of the cap is missing, like a one way vent or something. Parts breakdown in the manual is no help. I'll get pics soon.

Here are some pic of what I mean.

This is the cap location.

The "vent hole"

Here's the bottom, is some kind of one way valve or something supposed to be on the bottom of this cap?

I hope someone can shed some light on this problem. Thanks!

Like others have said......too much oil in reservoir......that cap is vented for air to come and go......the reservoir has to leveled just right to find the sweet spot......

I wish that were the case. It will push nearly all the fluid out. If anything the level is too low.

By "Leveled just Right" I meant the filler cap area on the reservoir has to be higher(splitter wedge lower)....otherwise it will push all the oil out....

Oh, that does make some sense, so you don't think there is anything wrong with my cap?

Yep....

You could take the cap off and the splitter would run the same.....(Tho don't leave it off-this is collect dirt/contamination)

Isn't there supposed to be a dip stick attached to the cap to measure the level of fluid at the lower part/reservoir? Look and see if the dip stick has fallen into the bottom, or is lost.

Is the beam that the cylinder is connected to used as a reservoir? If it is I would agree that the oil has expanded due to heat and it is being relieved through this hole.

No dipstick and yes, the beam acts as a reservoir but it does it cold too.

If the fluid level is correct and the hose connections are at the proper locations I'd consider you may have sludge in the tube of that beam reservoir which may be causing the fluid not to disperse and rush out of the vent.

EDIT: Please give us more photos of the whole unit that is broad. Additionally, pull those 6 bolts on the end of your beam reservoir and see if there is sludge inside that has reduced the volume.

I have an old MTD splitter that has worked fine for 15 plus years. I had the same problem, oil coming out of the filler cap until I realized the unit had to be level to function properly. The instructions say to maintain fluid level 1/2 inch from the top of the tank but doing so requires the unit remain level. Occasionally, I have to re-level the splitter as use and vibration causes the fluid tank side of the splitter to sink down. I would insure the unit is level and there is an airspace between the fluid level and the top of the tank. Good luck, I hope your MTD works as well as mine has.

WOW, I long forgot about this old thread I started. Heres an update (10 years later!) This was EXACTLY the problem. The tube in the reservoir has a screen that was partially blocked with sludge. After cleaning that out and 2-1/2 gallons of new oil it worked like brand new and still does to this day!

I just got one of these. Needs new seals in the hydraulic cylinder, but when I turn the big nut it doesn't come out. Anyone ever had one of these apart?

Yes, a few. Look on the side for a slot, you’ll see an opening for a lock wire, the lock wire is suppose to come out when you turn the gland, unless the end of the lock wire is broken. Then you’ll have to get creative to pull it out while turning.

Thanks, I never would have seen that. I didn't find any sort of a hole for a lock wire yet, any more suggestions? I spun the gland nut all the way around a couple times and could only see a smooth surface. Couldn't even tell if it was turning.

Jim

The smooth surface you see is the lock wire, more than likely .125” square. You’ll need to get that cyl off and on a bench with the slot on top to see what’s going on with the lock wire.
