Mud

It's begun! Our new house that is. I was out of town for a couple of days but got back yesterday to see the basement being dug. Backhoe-dude was wrapping up for the day so we had a nice chat. He revealed that our builder got her truck stuck and he had to push her out with his hoe. She didn't appreciate that when we spoke later /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif We discussed the mud but didn't feel the need to address it.

This afternoon I drove by after work to find three mixers in various stages of stuckness and the backhoe working to free them. My wife had already spoken with the builder about our options for tomorrow. We could lay down some stone, which will be long burried by the mixers or pay to have the backhoe on site for the walls. We agreed to the latter.

In spite of this difficulty, it's still pretty exciting to finally get started after all the planning we've done.

Culvert

This shot is for Harv and all the other culvert afficianados out there. I put this in last fall for our main driveway. I was pretty proud, but somehow knew it would need some more work later. The good news is it holds up to the weight of the equipment. Bad news is it's going to need some serious help when things dry out a bit.

Funny thing about all this is I wrote a few weeks back with my weather predictions solely based on our anticipated construction schedule. That was during a very mild spell with lovely, dry days. Reasonably solid ground. This past week it has rained off and on, and the temperatures at the optimum mud producing level. This afternoon the drizzle turned to snow with a fierce wind. Still above freezing, but not much. The forecast calls for single digits in a few days! Not the best for a freshly poured foundation /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

The excavator was making trips back and forth moving the mixers in and out. Here they're unhooking and the excavator will crawl around the mixer. The culvert is about the only area solid enough for the mixers to move under their own power /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The biggest test my own culverts have had was under the weight of my li'l Bota (plus my own 200 lbs

). I can't even imagine how much those behemoths in your picture weigh. I've never even seen a cement truck like that one. The big 'uns out here hold 11 yards, and that one looks much bigger.

Your pipe still looks round, which is a good sign. You must've done something right.

Thomas, in spite of my recent coffee addiction it's too late in the day for me to share a cup with you. I've had enough trouble sleeping lately without a bunch of caffiene this late.

Thanks Harv, but I think the hard part of a culvert is dealing with the flowing water that you and some of the others have talked about. Mine sit in a drainage ditch and rarely get wet /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
