Muhammad,

I guess you're the only one who can answer that, because you're the only one who knows how much the search feature is used in the present forum.

Sometimes, it appears to be used quite a bit - other times I see questions that obviously no effort was put into at all.

Personally, I feel that there's an awful lot of theory and technical stuff in the archives that I'd like access to, and a lot of info that I gathered and put there that I don't remember anymore and don't have recorded any place else. But it isn't worth doing it just for me - that's for sure.

Me too!

I don't know how much trouble it would be (guess that's for Muhammad to say!), but not having access to material that someone may have put considerable time/thought into posting seems to me like having someone put effort into writing a book, and then arbitrarily tearing out some of the pages, simply because they're near the "front" of the book.

Somehow suggests that the posts on TBN are less "valuable", if less recent.

Also, though I haven't brought it up before, I've often felt that the "search" function on TBN works poorly. I've put in every associated-word I could think of, when searching, and got no-or-little response, only to stumble across the subject later. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Everything I say about computer-stuff should be taken with several grains-of-salt, though, because I'm only a half-step above "illiterate" in these matters. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

I've actually found the search very good - but I think that the defaults should be set to be more helpful i.e. go back further and trigger off 'keywords' in 'All Forums'.

I had the old link to the old seach pages with the real old info. The ones that the discussions were closed on. Yes I did use that search after the new seach wouldn't bring anything up. Of course that can't be done anymore.

How much space would the old files take up? I would rather see a few less pictures rather than loose some of the good old posts.

Something I've noticed is that alot of the members don't use the search feature by some of the questions that are asked and reasked. Instead of looking at some of the old threads and adding to them. New ones are started daily. Can't tell if people don't realize it's there or something in it's setup.

Just my two cents

I kind of like the way CTB gives various tables of contents, by topic name, tractor model, etc. I also agree that the default search forum should be "All Forums." I never search any other way, and I always have to scroll to the bottom to get to All Forums.

My only comment on the subject, and Glenn beat me to it. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Agreed. For that matter, I find I usually tab into the forum field, hit Page Down (to select "All forums"), tab into search options, hit Arrow Down (to select "And"), then tab into Date Range and hit Page Down again (to select "All Posts"). This routine accounts for about 99% of my searches, I'd say. What about everybody else?

Gordon - I have to agree with you on this, too. This may be a bit of a sensitive issue, but many of the questions don't need to be asked. A simple search would benefit the poster as much as everyone else because they wouldn't even have to wait for an answer.

Which reminds me of a question: Muhammad, is there a way to copy a link to a specific message when you're in flat mode? It would be handy, because I like to put a url link in a message to refer folks to another one when it's appropriate, since it saves typing (and reminds everyone just how much stuff is available via the Search feature...). It would be nice if the subject (to the left of the link to the message being replied to) was itself a link to the current message.

I was thinking about skid plates the other day, started to post a message, but did a search instead. Didn't need to post the message...

I search the same way Mark does about the same percentage of the time.

Jor El, it's also like throwing away all the world's literature, philosophy, etc. prior to 1900 on the grounds that there is not enough shelf space in the library.

Muhammad, you have created this addictive TBN monster, and it wants to be fed.
