My MIL had a 1/3 acre lot cleared of all brush and those nasty blackberries they get (in the Seattle metro area). It was $100/hr and he spent 8 hrs.

The cut berry canes were about 12-18" thick on the ground and were in the 4-8" length range. Don't know if it was the exact machine, but it was a caged tracked machine, from talking to the neighbors.

One of the guys I worked with, driving a truck has had to retire due to his eyesight not passing DOT standards. He purchased one of these and is tearing up the woods somewhere in Ga.
His drawback is he is not mechanically inclined and upkeep on a truck, trailer and the tracked skidsteer, plus the grinder, all add up to $$$ when it comes to repair bills. The guy next door to me needs about 2 hours with one of these, but probably wont do it.

Sandman,

So the guy is too blind for the DOT to let him drive yet he puts a hugely expensive machine on a trailer and pulls it (commercially?) with a truck?

Rutwad -

If you are looking for a place to gain some experience, and don't mind traveling to WNC, or considering a lower hourly price, send me a PM -

Rutwad, to make this idea more appealing. I also have some property in WNC where I could really use your services. You could make a vacation of it. :)

OK, I'll get you going as well. One more job in Western NC available. Might as well make it a working vacation.

Be sure that sucker will work on hills though!

Looks like the hot ticket for clearing off next years Christmas tree planting spot. We don't use dozers to preserve the fragile mountain soil. Normally a brutal all winter fight with chainsaws, tractor skidding logs (much pucker factor), chippers, stump grinders, etc. until something usable appears out of our primevil forest mountainsides.

Attached is a pic of the typical challenge you will face. New growth poplar, laurel thickets, creek beds, constantly working off camber, and of course, our stunningly beautiful mountains. Flatlanders pay us good money in the fall to come up here just to "leaf-look" on vacation. What a deal, we're offering to pay you to take a vacation!

PM us if you can put it together.

Thanks
Bill

Guys, not saying that NC is not out of the question, but that is pretty far off. How much clearing do each of you need? And what city are you located in?

I'm on the TN/NC border, directly north of Asheville.
And boy do I have some thick stuff and hills for ya!
And really, I've got more clearing need than I have budget. I own 253 acres, and if I had the cash, I'd have every inch of it cleaned up. It was timbered about 5-8 years ago. Lots of briars and trash-trees.

I looked into buying an ASV with mulcher too. I thought about working it for other people in the mountains just to pay for it for my own use. Ended up deciding against it, cuz I don't like risk. I like sure things.

Maybe for enough work I could convince my wife she needs a Pigeion Forge/Gatlinburg vacation getaway.

So how much land would you be interested in clearing, or budgeting for clearing. PM me if you want.
