my property was hydromulched leaving very coarse debris. i am hogging 17 ac to make finer mulch. 28hp montana with cm 500 econo cutter. is this abusing the tractor? im not worried about wearing out the cutter

Do you have a slip clutch or sheer pins on the pto shaft of the mower? and are they adjusted correctly or the correct grade sheer pins? Those will help protect your tractor.

i'm sure they are shear pins as the slip clutch is optional. the cutter was bought new so i assume the pins are sized right. why does this protect the tractor unless the shear pins are too strong?

If the mower hits an object that makes the blades stop (and I don't think the mulch you are hitting is going to do it)... the force of the engine spinning has to continue. Either slip clutch or shear pins will allow that to happen. Yes, If you bought new, the shear pins should be fine. I would say that what you are doing should not hurt the tractor...
