When my father came down with Dementia I moved him into my house. It was late spring nad he hadn't planted 5 Dalia so I thought I would plant them here so he would have something that was familiar. His walking wasn't so good so I put them on the sides of the walkway to the front door, a full glass door with two glass sidelites.

A month after they started coming up we got a humming bird stuck in our house. The living room has a vaulted ceiling about 20 feet high with the timber frame exposed. Getting the bird out of the house was a real challenge. About a week later we got another one.

After repeating the wrangling a second time I decide to try and find out why all of a sudden they were entering out house. After standing in front of the house looking at the flowers my GF opened the front door. At about a 45 degree angle there was a perfect reflection of a Dalia. Turns out that the door got left open or pushed open by the dogs and the birds got fooled. This year we planted them on the side of the house.

Plenty of birds have flown into the sliding glass door on the deck. Now we leave the screen door halfway shut so it covers half the slider and half the fixed window to narrow the area that reflects trees and sky. That seems to cut down significantly on collisions.

For the past few springs, when the hummingbirds come back, if the feeder isn't out yet, they'll hover around where it's supposed to be or hover at the windows trying to get to the red glass things in the window.

Like I mentioned before, never have trouble when the tractor is parked elsewhere. Must have been a combination of the edge of the trees flight path and the lighting being just right. Maybe with the sides of the cab in the shade, they couldn't tell the glass was there. Guess my windows are clean! :D

...Guess my windows are clean! :D...

I was going to say something about how clean your window must be.

I've never had problems with birds hitting windows, but I've laughed for hours at bats. They'll fly around in a closed room and occasionally make a beeline headlong into a window. They'll hit the same window a hundred times. I guess their sonar tells them there's no way out, but they'll switch to their eyesight and see the "open" window and go for it. I have no affection for bats, so I feel little pity for their plight when they're inside.

We have a sun room that juts out from the long wall on the back of the house. There are two 5 ft. square picture windows opposite each other. I pick up at least a dozen dead birds each year. It happens so often the dogs don'e even lift their heads up anymore when one hits. Most are just stunned but then there are the fatalities.:(

I have swallows probably barn swallows that fly in almost everytime I mow the grass. They pick off whatever the mower stirs up. They are quite graceful and skilled in circling the tractor and not getting hit. It is quite entertaining sometimes. So far I am happy to report no casualities.

Dad passed away this past spring. It was for the best as the Dementia had really taken it's toll and he was no longer enjoying life. I still have his Dalia plants and will try my best to keep them alive (I don't have a green thumb). I just know better than to plant then near the front door.

...see the "open" window and go for it...

I've been told that if you actually open the window (and screen of course) when it's dark outside and leave a light on in the room they're in, the bats will fly out.

A bat actually landed on my back one sunny summer morning. It clung there for a minute then flew away. Guess he stayed out a bit past curfew and was taking a break trying to figure out how to sneak back in! :D

Bats are awesome insect eaters. I don't mind having them around as long as they stay out of the attic. Freakin' ugly, but I'd rather them than the billions of mosquitoes.
